Realistically, what is likely to happen if Republicans take over one or both Houses of Congress next month?

The most consequential thing is a lot of theater and no substantive legislation. The economy will grind to a halt, and very likely Ukraine will lose US support.

1/13
Withdrawing support for Ukraine will immensely harm US foreign relations. Our allies will know we can't be counted on and indeed will begin to fear (for good reason) we'll withdraw from all of our diplomatic and military commitments. Our standing in the world will collapse.

2/13
Of course, Republicans will blame that collapse on Biden, and the "news" media will likely back them up.

How will Republicans tank the US economy? They will make frightening demands in every budget bill, and attach them to every debt ceiling increase.

3/13
They've already telegraphed what some of their demands will be: national ban on reproductive rights, a ban on contraceptives, bans on same-sex marriage and all LGBTQ+ rights, for starters. Ending SocSec and Medicare. Maybe give state legislatures control over all elections.

4/13
Now, Biden has a spine of adamantium. None of these bills will get signed, and they'll all get vetoed. So it's "just" theater. But it has real-world effects: expect prolonged government shutdowns and possibly default on America's debt payments.

5/13
That last thing has never, ever happened. Interest rates would go through the roof. Treasury bills (and savings bonds) will become worthless. China may call in some of the multi-trillion-dollar debt we owe them, and we won't be able to pay. The world economy may collapse.

6/13
This is a true nightmare scenario, but Republicans are already threatening to do just that if they don't get their demands met.

And that's not all. There will be endless fake investigations and hearings into insane QAnon theories, accomplishing nothing.

7/13
The Executive Branch will be crippled by having Administration officials constantly forced to testify before House or Senate committees on the most ridiculous and frivolous matters.

If Republicans take the House, there will be weekly impeachments.

8/13
Name any or every Administration official, from FBI agents to the President and VP, and everyone in between. I expect a Republican House to impeach them all, multiple times.

They're even likely to start impeaching judges appointed in the last two years by President Biden.

9/13
Of course, the impeachments won't go anywhere. As we saw, it takes a 2/3 vote in the Senate to remove anyone impeached, and that won't happen. But the Senate is Constitutionally required to hold an impeachment trial, no matter how absurd the "charges" are. Which means,

10/13
... business in the Senate will grind to a halt, regardless of whether Republicans take the Senate or not. So even though the faux-impeachments are no more than profane theater, they will occupy much of the two years until 2024. No legislation will pass.

11/13
And if Republicans do take the Senate, we won't see any more federal judges appointed, because Republicans will refuse to hold and hearings or votes on any of Biden's nominees. Hope real hard another SCOTUS slot doesn't open up.

12/13
Again, Biden will not negotiate with these political terrorist activities and demands--and again, the media is likely to blame him for all the damage this does.

That's what to expect. It's truly terrifying.

You can help stop it. You know how.

13/13
PS. Note that none of this requires Republicans to kill the filibuster. That won't change anything, because even if they do, and force insane bills through Congress, Biden will veto them. So Republicans are not likely to bother with that.

I'm a writer. I love words. Words are magic. Words are sacred. Words can move you, shape your thoughts, shatter your emotions. Words are life.

Some words are cruel. Some are more powerful than others.

I know what gives a word power. If a word is taboo, it's powerful.

1/4
If you're not supposed to use a word--if people are afraid of its use--and then when you use it:

That breaks norms. It stops everyone in mid-thought. It demands reaction.

But a word can be robbed of its power. If it's overused, it becomes meaningless.

2/4
There are words we don't use, because we find them offensive. There are word we use (judiciously) BECAUSE we find them offensive.

Using a taboo word changes the consciousness of the people who hear it. And of the person who says it.

Magic is real. Words are magic.

Republican proposals:

1) First statement is an outright lie. Social Security and Medicare contribute ZERO to the federal deficit. They're entirely paid for by FICA taxes, which can't be used for anything else.

1/8
Furthermore, that means cutting benefits will NOT reduce the deficit, because FICA TAXES CAN'T BE USED FOR ANYTHING ELSE.

Got it? Good. Let's go on.

2/8
2) Second paragraph: Social Security can pay 70%-80% of promised benefits FOREVER. They other 20%-30% can be made up by eliminating the income cap on FICA contributions. We DON'T have to reduce benefits as Republicans want to.

If the Fascist Party wins the House, expect:

* endless fake impeachments
* constant mock "hearings"
* eternal fauxvestigations
* repeated attempts to repeal everything since 1940
* absurd Constitutional Amendments
* bills to end civil rights, LGBTQ+ rights, women's rights

1/4
If the Fascist Party wins the Senate, expect all the above, plus:

* no more federal judges
* Reconciliation Bills to tax the poor and middle class, and cut taxes for the morbidly wealthy

2/4
If the Fascist Party wins the either House, expect:

* nothing at all to get done
* frequent and prolonged government shutdowns
* end to Ukraine aid

For those impatient for DOJ to indict Trump:

Teri Kanefield pointed out, had Trump been indicted on Jan 7 2021, he'd have been accused of inciting a riot by giving an incendiary speech. No more than that.

And he'd have walked.

1/6
All Trump's defense attorneys would have had to do was put the leaders of the Proud Boys on the stand to claim credit for executing the insurrection (they had detailed plans to do it), and to say they weren't even at Trump's speech, so couldn't have been incited by Trump.

2/6
Trump would have been found not guilty, and would have walked.

See, in the months since the Jan 6 assault on the Capitol, we've discovered Trump did NOT "incite a riot" with his speech. He'd been planning an insurrection for months, which is far worse.

There is a historical novel to be written that culminates in the ten months from July 1881 to April 1882. It would be an epic encapsulating what we think of as the "Old West".

In that single ten-month period:

1/6
Billy the Kid was killed in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, on July 14, 1881.

The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral took place outside Tombstone, Arizona on October 26, 1881.

Jesse James was killed in St. Joseph, Missouri on April 3, 1882.

2/6
Any such novel should not play down the brutality of time times or of the people involved--the "heroes" as well as the villains.

These were, of course, independent events. But they carry repeating themes, and they form the basis for much of American myth.

A really BIG part of making fascism acceptable requires making reality unknowable.

Fascism relies on getting people to believe (or at least, to parrot) nonsense. Because people who believe absurdities will commit atrocities.

Yes, some things are true. And others are false.

1/4
Reality IS knowable. Not every "issue" has "two sides."

1+1=? has an actual answer. There is a knowable difference between up and down. The Earth is round, and orbits the Sun. Evolution happened (and still is happening). Humans are changing Earth's climate.

2/4
I know some of the statements in the previous tweet are "controversial" in the sense that rightists deny them. Also, COVID is not a hoax, Russia helped Trump in 2016, and Trumpists attacked the Capitol on 1/6 in an attempt to end democracy. These things are objectively true.
