In 2022, Abrego Garcia was stopped by the Tennessee Highway Patrol for speeding. Upon questioning, Garcia produced a "Limited Term Temporary” license, showing that Garcia was NOT a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
Upon further inspection, the officer observed eight other individuals crammed into the vehicle. Garcia stated he was on a three day trip from Houston, TX to Temple Hills, MD, a journey of over 1,400 miles by car. Despite the high occupancy, and lengthy trip, there was no luggage in the vehicle leading the officer to suspect this was a human trafficking incident.
All the passengers gave the exact same home address as Garcia. When asked what relationship Garcia had with the registered owner of the vehicle, he replied that the owner of the vehicle was his boss, and that he “worked in construction.”
