I am angry

Angry because I have spent almost three years pounding my head against a proverbial wall, presenting evidence publicly and privately, advocating, speaking out.

I have never felt like the voters had much power in New York. It’s ironic, because they talk
1/
about Democratic values and inclusion, yet very important positions aren’t chosen by open elections, and we don’t have access to important state offices. For ex:
- A committee picks my county health commissioner but we don’t elect the committee;
2/
It’s comprised of people elected to other positions. Positions you don’t pay much attention to, so candidates don’t really campaign, and no one really knows what they do.

- There’s no ombudsman at the state education office. There isn’t even a helpline

- If your child is
3/
harmed or endangered in school, you can call CPS - but they won’t take your report. They redirect you to an unmanned number at the state DoE

-If you have a dysfunctional BoE, you can’t recall a member. Only the Ed Commissioner can remove a BoE member. Now ask me how the
4/
Ed commissioner is picked.

Good q

- In our town, as in others, “nominating committees” pick ppl for the school board, to be mayor, to be trustees. Technically, we vote, but these elections are usually uncontested - and competition is discouraged and frowned upon
5/
I am not making any of this up. It’s less political commentary than it is commentary on the extreme dysfunction of this place.

So why I was surprised that no one listened to anything the people said? Not sure. I mean, they don’t have to

They’ve set up the government
6/
So that power is centralized, and completely inaccessible to the unelected

I haven’t had a politician ask to learn more about my opinion since Nita Lowey, more than ten years ago

Our BoE doesn’t realize they manage our school admin - not the other way around
7/
I watch recalls and ballot initiatives in other states with jealousy. BoE elections with deep envy. Congressional meetings with awe. What would it be like to live in a democracy? I have forgotten

You see, democracy isn’t about a viewpoint. It’s not about abortion or
8/
Immigration or race or gender or the military or oil. It is a system of government “by the people, for the people.”

I am angry, like I said at the beginning
Because whether I am in the minority or the majority, I should have access to leaders and a voice in what happens to me
9/
I don’t. And neither do millions of other New Yorkers

Because if we did, someone would be listening to the >=95% of parents who didn’t vaccinate their littles

If you stuck around this long, thanks. And #VoteThemAllOut2022
/end

So, I am responding to criticism that the CDC decision isn’t a mandate. I don’t have much time, so bear with me…other responsibilities
1. No, the CDC is technically not a rule making agency
2. Yes, many states/cities/schools/companies view them as the final arbiter of truth
1/
3. As it is not a rule masking agency, the CDC cannot technically mandate anything
4. However, due to the role the CDC plays in PH policy around the US, their decisions have the weight of policy in many places
5. That your red or purple state does not view the CDC…
2/
recs as gospel does not change the fact that others (eg NY, CA, etc) DO.
6. For these blue states, companies, schools, towns the CDC recs are adopted as mandate, and we have seen this throughout the pandemic
7. I understand why a Floridian would tell me I am wrong but a

Earlier today, I tweeted my concerns about an upcoming ACIP meeting on 10/19 because I felt the language suggested that ACIP would be considering adding the COVID vaccine to the pediatric vaccine schedule. Closer exam made it appear as if the meeting was just about VFC
1/
approval - Vaccines for Children. Well, regardless of my personal feelings about the COVID vaccine for kids, I think it should be covered. So I deleted the tweet.
@KelleyKga asked the right questions and did some sleuthing, and...
2/
The tweet below was shared by @Alexander_Tin
So it seems that @CDCgov @CDCDirector DO plan to ask ACIP to add the COVID vaccine to the pediatric vaccine schedule

Why is this a problem?
Because adding this vaccine (which only has an EUA)

“Cases are rising”

I am seeing this phrase in many places. It usually pertains to Europe or Asia, or it proposes a future rise

Ok. Fine. But why does this matter?

Seriously, even if a variant is immune evasive (gotta love that phrase), does it matter?
1/
I am inclined to say that what is more important than evasiveness is disease severity (and mortality, incl age-specific mortality). All indicators point to variants that will, as usual, affect the elderly and immunocompromised.
These are the same groups that have been at
2/
High risk throughout COVID. However, these new variants are not forecasted to cause anything like the spring 2020 fiasco.

I keep reading articles that urge vaccination with a sense of urgency and fear. However, the case really hasn’t been made as to why the booster has been

I don’t want to target anyone. I prefer, generally, to avoid being mean. However, I am disturbed by the number of ppl - esp doctors - who advocate forever masking. These are the people who post selfies wearing N95s, or pictures of themselves at parties or in restaurants…
1/
In masks, invariably with a comment about “staying safe” or “caring” or “if only everyone would join me.” They often (but not always) promote censorship and the silencing of debate

They are true believers

And…this bothers me. A LOT.
2/
1. Wearing a mask doesn’t signal greatness. It signals reliance on a tool that is questionably beneficial at best
2. Similarly, being maskless does not indicate lack of virtue
3. The ongoing failure of pro-maskers to acknowledge the costs of masking is, itself, unscientific

I think it’s important to remember that those of us who support a much, much slower -and older- approach to transitioning kids don’t “hate” them. On the contrary, we want medicine to adhere to the primum non nocere standard - first, do no harm.

1/
No matter how good the intentions, irreversible interventions - or even questionable interventions - should only be undertaken when all other options are exhausted.
There is a reason, eg, why mastectomy in breast cancer isn’t recommended when lumpectomy has been
2/
Shown to be effective: we know there’s something less traumatic, less invasive, less scarring, less risky. Cardiac cath vs open heart. Ovarian cyst removal vs oophorectomy. Etc

It is important to remember that these are CHILDREN. There are still trying on identities.

In case you haven’t been following:
@GovKathyHochul tried to establish a public health guideline along w @DrMaryTBassett that would apple them to quarantine people suspected of having a communicable disease. (Aka COVID)
I am not going to get into…
1/
brownstone.org/articles/court…
All the details but suffice to say there was no due process and no limit to government power. They didn’t even need to prove that the person being quarantined was sick

Fortunately, a cooler head prevailed, and this was stuck down (see attached article)

But wait.
2/
Hochul and Bassett are APPEALING THIS DECISION
(Oh, and don’t forget: Hochul still has us living under a COVID emergency)
You can help.

Call, email, or write Governor Hochul (518- 474-8390 Twitter: @GovKathyHochul) & Attorney General (800-771-7755 Twitter: @TishJames)
