IHRDC has found that security forces killed at least 94 people, including children, and fired live ammunition indiscriminately into crowds.
Most disturbing are the footage and reports that forces fired into the Great Mosalla of Zahedan, where hundreds of civilians were still conducting Friday prayers. Witnesses told IHRDC that the majority of the casualties were in the Great Mosalla.
Witnesses reported that medical care was denied to the injured in local hospitals. In at least one case, surgery was purposefully delayed, resulting in the death of one individual. At least one arrest occurred at a Zahedan hospital.
According to a source at Bu Ali Hospital in Zahedan, a high number of patients were hospitalized as a result of being shot by live ammunition, forcing medical staff to “give priority to the surgery of those who were more likely to survive” especially on Friday and Saturday.
One source described how the shooting continued: "I saw them at the intersection of Khayyam Street and Razi Street firing teargas and shooting directly at the people who gathered in front of Makki Mosque. The sound of shooting was so intense that we could not hear each other."
At least 14 children are confirmed to have been killed during the Zahedan clashes, and children have continued to be killed in the days after. A two-year-old who was shot dead by government forces on Jam-e Jam Boulevard on October 2, 2022.
The death toll continues to rise from Bloody Friday. The Islamic Republic must be held accountable for massacring citizens in Zahedan and for its brutal response to ongoing protests.
