Some of those Tory MPs who are panting at the prospect of a Boris return on the basis that he’s really popular and won a huge personal mandate, might want to have a look at the actual figures from the 2019 election. 1/6
The difference that Boris made – the increase in the Tory vote from 2017 – was just 329,770 extra votes. The Lib Dems, on the other hand, attracted an extra 1.325m votes. More than four times as many voters switched their votes to Swinson’s Lib Dems than Johnson’s Tories 2/6
The real story of the 2019 election of course is the collapse in the Labour vote. Between 2017 and 2019, Labour lost 2.6m votes. Allowing for churn, Lib Dems picked up 51% of the lost Labour vote, and the Tories just 13%. 3/6
Having spoken to thousands of voters during the 2019 election, and both before and afterwards, I know that many of them were concerned at the prospect of Jeremy Corbyn becoming Prime Minister and voted to stop that happening. 4/6
What happens when voters go to the polls and no longer fear a Corbyn government? 5/6
Obviously, it's not for me to advise Tory MPs on their choice of leader, but I hope they will consider the facts carefully before making their minds up. 6/6
