More than 42000 refugees from the Indian-occupied Kashmir struggle to survive in AJK. They live in 13 #slums where a #humanitarian tragedy has been unfolding over the decades.

There’s no clean drinking water there, and all settlements reek of a foul smell due to the absence of sewerage system.
And they are overcrowded. Tens of individuals are forced to sleep in every room/tent of a shelter.Each shelter has one room, one washroom and a kitchen.

So parents and their grown up children have been living in that single room for 34 years. That’s where they eat their meals, and students among them do their homework while others are trying to sleep.

Sometimes parents are walking around outside at night because their children are studying. And that is where they get married, and where women give birth to children.

One can imagine what kind of stress such lifestyle may be causing, especially over young children who are increasingly showing mental stress and other psychological issues.

Financially, they receive a monthly Guzara Allowance stipend of Rs 3,500 per head. So a family of five gets Rs 17,500 per month. The parents do odd jobs to add to the family income, which on a roughly calculated average comes to around Rs 30,000 per month.

This is not enough to pay electricity and gas bills, children’s schooling expenses and running the household kitchen.
The torture and pain that Kashmiri refugees are going through is indescribable.

How to pay for school books and fees of their kids, where to pay utility bills from, where to pay their house rents from if they are living in rented accommodation?

These unending questions have push them down into the world of an unending mental agony, turning many into psychotic patients. In these circumstances, most kids either fail to join school, or are dropped out in mid-session.

These refugees did do well by escaping genocide of Kashmiris by India,but are now condemned to live in the state of a continuing mental torture. They exist in an eternal state of humiliation, starvation,joblessness, deprivation,depression, discrimination & marginalization.

Their fate is either to face bullets, bombs or pellets, or live off their lives in jails or slums.
They wonder if this is the life they sacrificed everything for? Did they leave their homes, lands and careers in Indian Kashmir so that they be condemned to live in slums?

They destroyed their own lives, and now their children face the same fate. They don’t think their circumstances will ever change in the times to come.
