When Zia's martial law regime executed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the then PM of Pakistan, in a sham trial, his both sons went to Kabul and launched a guerilla war under their militant org Al-Zulfikar. Shah Nawaz was leading the training of Al-Zulfikar militants in Afghanistan.
Pakistan was hosting, training and arming Mujahideen and actively supported them against Kabul and AFG was doing the same with the separatists & ethnic militants and activists who ran terrorist and sabotage ops in Pak with the help of KGB and KHAD.
A number of important weddings took place between the leading Pakistani men in Kabul with Afghans.
Murtaza & Shah Nawaz, the two brothers married two Afghan sisters Fauzia & Rehana. Afrasiab Khattak & Juma Khan Sufi also got married to their Afghan spouses in Kabul at that time.

In the first instance, Mujahideen, in order to please Zia, had bribed the family servant of their Afghan wives to poison the Bhutto brothers but their dog ate the food first & died.

In the second instance, the Bhutto brothers, specially Shah Nawaz escaped death, when a bullet was fired at their car but missed to hit them. Acc. to Benazir, they had information through a Pakistan Pashtun tribesman man that Zia wanted Shah Nawaz's head first.
Some years later in Paris in 1985, Shah Nawaz would die under mysterious circumstances in his flat that he shared with his wife and daughter .
Benazir, and other Bhutto's family members, suspected that Rehana, Shah Nawaz Afghan wife, was somehow involved in it.
