NEW: 30 members of Congress are urging President Biden to pursue direct diplomacy for a negotiated settlement to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The letter recognizes the difficulties involved in engaging Russia given its illegal invasion — but make the case that now is the time 🧵
In recent weeks, the risk of nuclear war has increased, fighting escalated, and global economic insecurity deepened.
Thousands of people are dead and tens of millions more impacted. Skyrocketing prices in wheat, fertilizer, and fuel are driving global hunger and poverty.
If the war goes on, these crises will escalate. As @POTUS has said, “there’s going to have to be a negotiated settlement here.”
That's why the Members call for military and economic support for Ukraine to be paired with proactive diplomacy for a realistic ceasefire framework.
The majority of voters support this call for diplomacy.
Recent @DataProgress polling shows 57% approval of negotiation to end the war, even if it means some compromise with Russia. 59% agree the U.S. has a leading role to play in such negotiations.
The full letter, including the lawmakers' outline of what a negotiated settlement could look like, can be found here ➡️ progressives.house.gov/_cache/files/5…

We're thrilled to see this action to advance criminal and racial justice.
We applaud @POTUS using his executive authority to issue these pardons, and his platform to call on governors across the country to join him in this action.
The ongoing federal prohibition of marijuana is a vestige of the failed, racist War on Drugs that targeted and devastated Black and Brown communities.
Studies show a Black person is 3.64x more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than a white person, even though they use marijuana at similar rates.
In just one year, Latinos were 77% of federal marijuana sentences despite making up less than 20% of U.S. population.
BREAKING: The House just passed the Inflation Reduction Act.
After more than a year of negotiations and even longer campaigning on these issues, the Democratic majority is sending legislation to tackle climate action, tax fairness, and expand health care to the President’s desk.
Today, Democrats are keeping promises to act on climate, drug costs, and are advancing key progressive priorities.
As in the Senate, not a single House Republican voted for this bill — despite its popularity with the majority of Americans across the political spectrum.
We would not be here today without the fight of Progressive Caucus members.
BREAKING: After more than a year of negotiations, the Senate has finally passed a reconciliation bill with every Democrat voting in support.
Our view of the just-passed Inflation Reduction Act 🧵
The Inflation Reduction Act includes many pieces of the House-passed Build Back Better Act to:
✅ Make the largest-ever federal investment in tackling the existential threat of climate change
✅ Lower healthcare costs
✅ Begin to ensure that corporations pay their fair share
We're heartbroken that the care economy, housing, and immigration, and more were left on the cutting room floor — and that Republicans successfully removed insulin price caps for those with private insurance.
But this bill takes real steps forward on key progressive priorities.
NEW: We're releasing a Progressive Caucus agenda for executive and legislative action to address the crisis of abortion access, reproductive freedom, and other rights threatened by the Supreme Court decision last month in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. 🧵
In the weeks since the ruling to end constitutional protections for abortion, Congress and the Biden admin have taken some essential steps.
The House just passed bills to enshrine the right to abortion in federal law, and protect the right to interstate travel for abortion care.
HHS acted to ensure retail pharmacies can't refuse patients repro health care meds, and that no one can be denied lifesaving emergency medical treatment for pregnancy complications.
DOJ stood up a repro rights task force, and has clarified states can't ban medication abortion.
This week, the House will pass next year's National Defense Authorization Act, which decides policy for the Pentagon and national security.
Throughout the process, CPC members have pushed for Democrats to use this governing moment to advance just and progressive priorities. 🧵
Progressives secured debates and votes on dozens of amendments to:
✔️Strengthen labor and civil rights for service members
✔️Minimize civilian harm abroad
✔️Reassert congressional war powers
✔️Reduce wasteful Pentagon spending
✔️Reduce costly, unnecessary nuclear weapons programs
Our members have advanced policy to:
➖Authorize low-cost federal production of insulin for the first time (from Chair @RepJayapal and @janschakowsky!)
➖Preference contractors that respect the rights of workers
➖Prevent forced arbitration of contracts involving service members
