CoVID is the biggest global health and socio-economic disruptor since WWII. It presents both the biggest challenge and the biggest opportunity of our lifetime.
When CoVID hit in early 2020, governments were slow to act. Then they panicked, overspent on scarce PPE and equipment, and locked down in the absence of vaccines.
They invested in a domestic PPE industry and ventilation only to lose interest when vaccines were announced.
We were so naive back in 2020 thinking ppl just didn't know #COVIDIsAirborne & that if we told them, & what to do about it, we would all work happily together & stop the pandemic in its tracks.
In case anyone cares, CDC mask mandates make a huge difference. 80% mask use with mandates, 5% mask use without mandates.
This week, HALF A MILLION MORE AMERICANS PER DAY, every day, will get infected w COVID because there is no CDC mask mandate.
😢
The CDC no mask mandate policy will soon lead to an additional 250 dead Americans per day, every day.
😢
But let's argue over whether or not we should be sympathetic to the person in charge of CDC who set the no mask policy, calls masks the Scarlet Letter, appears unmasked in photos w pandemic leaders & otherwise disparages & discourages mask use, for getting COVID while unmasked.
Last night CDC Director Rochelle Walensky tested positive for COVID-19. She is reported to be at home resting. Her condition is unknown."
"In a press release from CDC, her condition was reported as mild. I should caution viewers this claim is at risk of bias and has not been confirmed. We at CBS have no way to independently verify the CDC's claim her symptoms are 'mild' at this time."
"Ms. Walensky recently met with other world leaders of the pandemic response during a period where transmission may have occurred. The CDC Director was unmasked during the meetings and may have contracted or transmitted the disease at that time."
I know this wave, Wave 8, seems like the same old same old but this time it's different.
We used to have a respite between waves during the summer for ppl and hospitals to recharge & regroup prior to the fall & winter onslaught. This time we didn't.
We used to finish a wave before we started the next one. This time we're starting a new wave on top of the current wave.
