It's #DEVORUM15 day! For our 15th annual research forum, we have some awesome talks on Auckland's hazardscape coming up today and tomorrow. The whole event was planned in conjunction with @ResilienceRNC. Get hyped!

#DEVORA
#DEVORUM15 kicked off with a karakia by Kelvin Tapuke and welcomes by David Johnston, Jan Lindsay, and @nzfossils
First talk: review of major hazard events in Auckland. We need to look at the past to explore lived experiences during these events. ImageImageImage
@nzfossils Biggest past hazard events impacting #Auckland:
1891: earthquake
1936: cyclone/flooding
2012: tornado
1996: Ash fall
1868: tsunami Image
Liam Wotherspoon is up next, chatting about updates to the national seismic hazard model & potential impacts on Auckland. Image
Great news! Updates to building codes, etc in Auckland based on the NSHM updates are not too stressful, even though new sources of seismic hazard have been identified (bc of low slip rates, ~ 0.5 mm /yr). #DEVORUM15
Work on more models, e.g. liquefaction and landslips, is ongoing. Luckily the pumiceous materials from our central North Island eruptions are not super prone to shaking. But we've infilled the Harbour up to ~22 m in some places along the waterfront! Image
@GeoJanUoA: a high level volcanic hazard summary for Auckland. #DEVORUM15
The rectangle in this slide shows the scale of the AVF compared to other NZ volcanoes. Even thoughthe volcanoes are smaller, eruptions will still have a large impact. What is a "small eruption," anyway?? Image
Some volcanic hazards and remaining geological questions... ImageImageImageImage
Lots of other talks today and tomorrow will dive into specific volcanic details!! #DEVORUM15 ImageImageImage
Ross from Auckland Council promises a "boring" talk reviewing hazard management in Auckland to balance out all the exciting hazard content 🤣 #DEVORUM15 Image
Council have an obligation to collect info re: hazards and provide it to the public as soon as they know about it. This is why they need to know what research is coming down the pipeline and why events like this are so important! #DEVORUM15 Image
Omg! "Simplified" vs "accurate" versions of who is involved in hazard management in Auckland and how it's all connected #DEVORUM15

but Ross cautions, "if everyone is responsible, sometimes no one is responsible" ImageImage
Sylvia Tapuke chats about our exciting new #PhD project exploring the mātauranga Māori of the #AVF!
