Thursday concluded 5 years @twitter. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have worked with such an incredible group of people building the world’s town square for all of our stakeholders. The work isn’t complete, but we made meaningful progress.
I have great hope for @twitter. At its best, it democratizes communication and knowledge, ensuring accountability and equal distribution of info. It’s a huge responsibility for everyone that shares in the work. I wish them strength, wisdom, and foresight.
Thanks to the incredible work of thousands, we doubled audience & revenue, and affirmed our potential to inform and inspire conversations all around the world about news, sports, politics, music, entertainment, markets, and the rest… while driving $TWTR from ~$17 to $54.20.
Yet digital ads is at a crossroads, driven by the economy, the shift from linear to digital, public policy, and the ads ecosystem. People are accustomed to trading privacy for access, and as digital ads matures, fewer platforms may have more info and control.
Meanwhile, the commercial internet is ~30, and @twitter is 16! The printing press also took decades to evolve from misinformation and the need for standards to incredible knowledge and idea sharing across oceans and borders. Internet norms are still forming and I’m optimistic.
The past 6 months have pulled on every mental muscle I’ve developed in 48 years. You learn so much when times are challenging and unpredictable, when we are tired or feel our integrity questioned. Our team remained kind, respectful, and steadfast. They’re lifelong friends.
Thank you to my former colleagues, partners, advertisers, shareholders, board, and the people that use @twitter. Thank you to my family, especially @Mayalangersegal, my prom date, wife, and best friend, our amazing kids, and my mentor, friend, hero, and dad, @EdwardDavidSeg1.
The last 5 years have been the most fulfilling of my career. The people, the potential, and the importance of Twitter. The shifts in technology, politics, culture. This will be hard to beat… but after catching my breath, I’m going to try! In the meantime, see you on @twitter!

Today @twitter is opening our offices in SF and NYC. Our hearts go out to any tweeps around the world still unable to come back to an office, but this is a long awaited day for many.
It’s going to be different, both near term with COVID-protocols, and long term. We aren’t asking everyone to return. Ever. We will attract and retain the best people, enabling the most creative and productive work of their careers, whether on their sofa or in an office.
We will create new norms. Some of us are nervous extroverts or live in tight quarters without good focus space. Others will feel unshackled from meetings, urban areas, face time, or a century’s office norms, free to avoid a commute, small talk, or even traditional hours.
Today @twitter is investing $100 million from our balance sheet in Black, Latinx and other underserved communities in the US, and we made it easy for other companies to do the same. Here’s how we did it - send this to the CFO and Treasurer at your company so you can join us!
We talked to many with similar goals, and are grateful for @Google, @Netflix, @PayPal, @Square, and others that have announced unique investments and inspired our journey. We talked to nonprofits, investors, banks, and regulators to explore how we could have impact at scale.
Quickly we realized it was harder to invest in underserved communities than it should be, and we decided we would take our time but would create a blueprint so others wouldn't meet the same challenges we did. Together we can have much more impact!
1 - Segal cookie recipe... bowl of: 2 1/4 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda; beat in with handheld in order: 1 cup of room temp butter (don’t melt), 1/2 cup white sugar, 1 cup brown sugar, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, 2 room temp eggs, 3 cups @nestletollehouse semisweet.
2 - Put in fridge for a few hours, then heaping tablespoons of batter on tray, they should be tall not flat or wide
Bake for 9 mins at 365. Every oven is different so this is trial and error.
Remove from oven and sprinkle immediately with sea salt
Remove from tray to cool
3 - My then girlfriend and now wife made them with me in high school. Now our kids do so with me. Every few years I’ve iterated as I’ve learned from others and become more patient (yes, I was even less patient earlier in life)
