Here we go. Dustin Duncan for the 2nd time in a week. We shall see how he's received at #stfcouncil. Just as an aside, I'm expecting a canned speech and not much else.
Introducing the minister. Has been in politics since he was 26 years old. Introduction finished. Smattering of applause... I didn't clap.
Starting off with the govt's investments in education. EAs, capital investments, etc.
Talking about online learning. Uses pandemic to rationalize creation of the centralized system. Said it will allow students equal access to courses online. No funding model or learning platform in place yet. Will figure out in months and years to come. So long?!
Talking about mental health supports for newcomers. I teach EAL and haven't heard about this program from anyone but the minister so far. Would love to know more.
Roughriders x 2. Check. ✅
New this week, a dig at the Roughriders performance on the field. Hoping the mental health initiative with the riders is better.
Assures teachers they know we have more students than expected. Promises they are looking into this. Maybe stop looking and do something about it. This is not a new problem.
Says he looks forward to hearing about teachers' discussions regarding bargaining. I'm not sure he does. 🤷🏼♀️
The Minister is finished. We got the abbreviated version today. Smattering again. @STFPresident up now. Comments that we need funding to meet challenges of teachers in the classroom. Biggest applause of the day... Apparently teachers can really clap when they want to.
That's all I've got. Lunch time. Needless to say, teachers aren't happy and the speech wasn't well received. Less talk and more action is needed by this govt to support education in this province.

Just remembering a couple other moments from Duncan's session yesterday... He was talking about the Covid funding from the feds and how it was temporary. A teacher yells out that Covid isn't over. He replies and says it's in a different phase now. She's like "Yeah, okay." 😂
Re: the Legacy Christian Academy abuse scandal and his response. He explains the measures he's taken to remove accused individuals and monitor schools more closely. After his explanation, several teachers yell out "Cut their funding!"
And I get to see the 2nd showing of Minister Duncan at STF council next week. Lucky me. Will livetweet what I can. I really do give him credit for showing up even though I don't agree with his views on school funding priorities, individual school choice, health measures, etc.
Duncan describing all the capital funding for education. Colour me unimpressed. We need those funds for kids in the classroom, too. #reginateachersconvention
Talking about mental health. No one can argue this is important but being proactive is necessary. Support the social programs up front. $500,000 for mental health first aid. That's a drop in the bucket. 🤷🏼♀️
Roughriders mentioned twice so far. That should be enough for a speech about education I would think. #reginateachersconvention
Inexplicably, the govt gives three Christian schools at the center of abuse allegations another chance including Grace Christian School. They already had no building after being essentially evicted by the church they were using. 1/8
Despite dozens of abuse allegations including several against the director of Grace Christian School (formerly at Legacy Academy), they assigned a government hired administrator to try to make it work so this school could remain open WITH public funds. But it gets worse... 2/8
John Olubukun refuses to work with these government administrators even though the govt is literally bending over backward to keep this school open. Remember, they don't need to have many certified teachers or any regulated teachers. John himself is NOT a certified teacher. 3/8
