In the coastal areas of Karnataka, each village has a different deity who is worshiped by the villagers. These deities are called Daiva and Daiva fulfill every wish of villagers and protect them. The form and nature of the deities are also different.
'Bhoot Kola' is very common in the coastal areas of Karnataka. Bhoot Kola is a form of worship. Bhoot Kola (dance for the Daiva) is basically performed in the open ground near the village Daiva Mandir. Bhoot Kola is divine dance, not everyone can do it.
Bhoot Kola is performed by a trained person and it is believed that for some time he himself becomes 'Daiva'. The person who performs Bhoot Kola, does amazing makeup and dances holding bells, sword and fire in hands.
When the Daiva enter inside that person, he resolves the issues of the villagers and gives them advice and promises to fulfill everyone's wishes. Panjurli Daivva and Guliga Daiva are the main Daities. Panjurli Daiva Swaroop is like a wild boar and he protects the villagers.
Panjurli Daivva is also associated with the Varaha avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu. The other main daiva is Guliga whose Swaroop is fierce and he is angry in nature. Guliga Daiva's hunger never satisfies.These two deities are always worshiped together.
