Quick 🧵/ Igor Igorevich Stepanov, 56 years old, former marine, was killed in Ukraine. What’s interesting is the fact that he was recently recruited by "Wagner PMC" and this fact was publicly revealed by local media in Volokonovka, Belgorod region, where he lived ⬇️.
A large obituary of Stepanov written by his son (on the right on the photo above) was published on Sunday. It says that Stepanov was posthumously awarded with a Wagner's medal for "blood and bravery". (Source: archive.ph/zUDuf)
According to the obituary, in 1999 Stepanov was offered a position of the "instructor" in the 61st Naval Infantry Brigade, after several years he moved to a landing-assault company there, sailed many seas and even fought pirates in Somalia. He retired in 2011.
Obituary says Stepanov was willing to fight when the war in Ukraine broke up, but was refused to go as a volunteer because of his age. "Then he was offered a position of an instructor in a private military company", his son writes.
Stepanov died in Bakhmut on Sep. 24th, when Ukrainian army reportedly repelled several Russian attacks there. There were many mentions of "Wagner PMC" mercenaries fighting there, including freshly recruited prisoners.
Was Stepanov (on the left on the photo below) recruited by Wagner to "train" those former prisoners? May be, though I think they don't get a lot of training, as well as Russian "mobiks".
Volokonovka, where Stepanov lived before joining Wagner, is just 40 km from Soloti, one of the main Russian hubs close to UA border, where new recruits are being deployed before sending them to Ukraine.
The fact that local media openly inform their readers about a Wagnerite death would surprise me much a month ago, but looks like now things become more transparent, after Evgeny Prigozhin admitted his connection with PMC and started to act as an independent political figure. /END
As @solarisveritas correctly notes, reporting Wagner KIAs openly became quite common since the middle of October.
There’s at least 1 more Wagnerite from another Belgorod region town, Alexey Mitchenko, who was killed on the same day as Stepanov, Sep. 24th. Reports on SM came on Oct. 7 (archive.ph/3RFi7), now "big" local media publish articles about him freely. bel.ru/news/2022-10-3…
Together with @pustota we analyzed dozens of articles in Russian media about Wagnerites’ deaths. There’s a clear pattern: after Prigozhin admitted that he created "Wagner PMC" (Sep. 26) Russian media indeed don’t hesitate to openly attribute those killed to Wagner any more. ⬇️
Some exceptions apply, of course, like infamous Vladimir "Vakha" Andanov (on the photo, repoted KIA in June with open reference to Wagner) or Alexey Konischev from Ekaterinburg (reported KIA on August 12 as a Wagnerite by major regional media, see the link) e1.ru/text/world/202…
Still, there are many more "official" media reports about the deaths of Wagner mercenaries now – we counted more than 15 since the end of September VS nearly the same number from Feb. till Sep. Here’s the full story, Google Translate for your language! svoboda.org/a/konveyer-sme…

🧵/ link in the last tweet. Together with @cxemu and @KOvsianyi we found a photo and a video of a Russian soldiers and equipment being evacuated from the right bank of Dnipro river to Nova Kakhovka by ferry. Ferries go unloaded to the right bank at least since Oct. 8th.
The video was posted by "LPR" soldier called Makar Teplinsky on Oct. 13th. On Oct. 10th he posted a photo from the same journey (archive.ph/SZTTz). The journey itself might have happened a few days earlier.
We geolocated the video and the photo as filmed here: 46.776746, 33.323598, near the Dnipro right bank, Kazatske village. @GeoConfirmed
🧵Together with @pustota we checked several videos of Russian POWs, where soldiers or authors of the videos claim that they were recently and/or forcibly mobilized. We found that in some cases it’s not true: some may pretend to be conscripts, expecting better treatment.
As an example we checked the video of 5 Russian POWs taken near Svatove, where 4 of them claim to be recently mobilized. t.me/Pravda_Gerashc…
I identified one of them, Vladimir Zhdanov (second on the left, vk.com/id171349875), and messaged his friend on VKontakte. He told me that back in April Zhdanov already voluntarily fought in Ukraine. 2 years ago Zhdanov congratulated his followers with "Mil intel day".
🧵/ link in the last tweet. More than 100 Russian conscripts from Bryansk allegedly refused to go to Ukraine from their base in Soloti, Belgorod region. Photos and even live video streams by soldiers from there allow to suggest why: no training, old equipment, total mess.
One of the soldiers reached out to journalists with his complaints (t.me/sotaproject/47…). He says commanders told them they will be sent in a few days "to retake Lyman", while only one man from the previous group of 100 mobilized soldiers sent to Ukraine returned.
This claim was corroborated today by the relative of one of the soldiers from the same group. He was sent to Lyman on October 1st and is missing since then.
🧵Russia, Siberia. Random photos taken by conscripts based in Novosibirsk Higher Military Command School. On October 5th a mother of a 28 y.o. conscript wrote her son died there, she have been told a "heart attack" was the cause. (ok.ru/profile/518112…). Random photo no. 1
She doesn't believe, says her son was very healthy. Says he messaged her about "everybody rambling around and drinking heavily" (random photo of a conscripts from Novosibirsk no. 2)
Barracks for those mobilised in Novosibirsk. The woman says she was not able to get her son's body for 3 days. "Think twice before sending your children there", she wrote. Random photo of conscript's camp in Novosibirsk no. 3
In an weird twist this guy, whose name I think now can be revealed (Sergey Surkov) drops with yet another complaints and allegations against their commanders and organizers of the Russian mobilization. Says they're "somewhere in Belgorod region". t.me/insiderUKR/428…
