🔴NEW: Is the new-old Home Secretary’s position already untenable again?
Suella #Braverman’s repeated use of private email to conduct government business represents a shocking disregard for the rules. 🧵
The Home Secretary has now admitted to having sent government documents to her personal Email address six times during her first stint on the Job, under Liz Truss.
This is in addition to the breach that led to her first resignation.
Downing St. said of the breaches that “clearly there was an error of judgement and she has taken responsibility”, adding that Prime Minister Sunak has “full confidence” in her.
Initially, Braverman stated that “as soon as I realised my mistake I rapidly reported this on official channels and informed the cabinet secretary”, but these claims have been contradicted by, among other things, her own chronology of events: thetimes.co.uk/article/suella…
She is due to give a statement to the commons after 5pm today.
Dame Diana Johnson, chair of the home affairs committee, has said that “she’s got to deal with this because until this is dealt with she can’t get on and do the job of Home Secretary”. theguardian.com/politics/live/…
But this isn’t the issue being raised when assessing her suitability for her role as Home Secretary...
It was also recently revealed that she was, in January, ‘probed over a national security leak’ relating to an injunction reportedly being sought by Braverman to stop the BBC from identifying a spy accused of abusing his position. independent.co.uk/independentpre…
MI5 were reportedly “concerned” about how the info had become public.
As reported by @openDemocracy, Braverman has also recently refused to accept the findings of a cross-party report that highlighted that internal failings, not a rise in migrant crossings, were to blame for the breakdown of the government Asylum system: opendemocracy.net/en/suella-brav…
The report explained that the need to clear the backlog was crucial to fixing the problem, but the Home Office rejected this, saying its highest priority was to “deter and reduce immigration”.
The department has been found to be operating at a “glacial pace” in processing.
She’s also facing scrutiny for ‘ignoring advice’ that keeping asylum seekers at a processing centre near Manston, and blocking transfers, risked breaking the law. independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
The decision led directly to overcrowding and outbreaks of scabies and diphtheria at the facility. Sources told @thetimes that “she was refusing to allow anyone to leave Manston, even though the numbers were well above capacity”
Charities have decried the treatment as “inhumane”

🔴With Matt Hancock back in the headlines, @allthecitizens takes a look back over some of the scandals we reported on during his time as Health Secretary. 🧵
During the pandemic, we reported extensively on Hancock and the Conservative Party, covering PPE contracts awarded to Tory donors and associates, untruths told during the height of Covid, and the mishandling of the crisis.
One of the most worrying of the changes is to do with the introduction of “disruption prevention” measures ⚠️
This means police can take absolutely draconian steps to prevent people from protesting, even if they have never been charged with a crime.
What are these “preventive powers”?
➡️Ban individuals from attending protests
➡️Authorise use of devices (tags) to monitor individuals
➡️Order individuals to remain at a certain place/for certain time
➡️Bar people from certain places/stop them from associating with certain people
The announcement of changes to existing GDPR replacement came from Michelle Donelan.
Speaking about this at the #ToryConference, she said, "we will be replacing GDPR with our business and consumer-friendly, British data protection system" /2 techmonitor.ai/policy/geopoli…
She also said that data adequacy will be retained "so businesses can trade freely."
But many are worried an added regulatory regime on top of the EU's GDPR will only add to the woes of UK businesses working with EU countries. /3
Starts by reiterating commitment to growth: "since the 2008 financial crisis, the potential of this great country has been held back by persistently weak growth."
"I want to deliver a low tax, high wage, high growth economy... that mission remains"
Talks of supporting businesses and households. Cites conditions "worsening due to Putin's war in Ukraine"
"But it is clear that parts of our mini-budget went further and faster than markets were expecting, so the way we are delivering our mission right now has to change"
