🧵 Here’s a short thread explaining why the Ford government’s move today is history-making and extremely alarming. It’s DEFCON 1 for all workers. 1/
It is a fundamental right in Canada for workers to be allowed to form unions and to collectively bargain with their employer for their contracts. Withdrawing their labour (i.e., striking) is a protected action as well. 2/
By imposing a contract on CUPE education support staff, Ford’s Conservatives are denying them the right to bargain collectively. Dalton McGuinty’s Liberals tried the same move a decade ago and ended up having it overturned on the basis of violating the Charter. 3/
Knowing that this legislation would fail an inevitable legal challenge, Ford has invoked the ‘Notwithstanding Clause’ of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms (the constitution). This makes the law compliant with the constitution where it otherwise would not be. 4/
I am not a legal expert so I cannot say whether other legal options exist for CUPE, but at the very least their most significant legal avenue, and the one taken against McGuinty’s legislation has been closed off. 5/
This is important because it is the first time the notwithstanding clause has been used to limit labour rights. It would also be just the 21st time the clause has ever been legislated in its entire history (i.e., since 1982). 6/
There’s a whole other discussion about how the increasing use of the notwithstanding clause since 2018 threatens the constitutional foundations of Canada. But that’s not for me to get into. 7/
CUPE has now signalled that they will strike regardless of the legislation. This will be an illegal strike. How the Ford government responds is, for now, a mystery. However it will be enormously significant. 8/
The ‘probability space’ right now is so wide it has multiple time zones. Hopefully, the labour movement realizes that this opens the door to the complete destruction of their ability to bargain collectively, should the government so choose. 9/
This applies nationally, as all provincial governments and the federal government are able to make use of the notwithstanding clause. With a possible Poilievre prime ministership, this should terrify labour organizers. 10/
The thing is, labour has more power than the government. Working collectively, organized labour is the most powerful force in our society. Labour leaders must recognize this and plan accordingly. 11/
The very foundations of workers rights are under attack right now. Every element of labour needs to get together to protect their collective rights. This means a general strike. Every unionized worker off the job, in defence of our collective rights. 12/
This is the kind of mobilization we need. Not just for labour but for all the crises we are facing simultaneously. If we take the right action now, we will end up with the appropriate platform to address the climate crisis, the housing crisis, and everything else we’re facing.13/
This is a crisis in and of itself, but if we take the right actions now, this crisis could prove transformative and ultimately hopeful. If we fail to act, our descent into fascism is all but guaranteed. 14/
‘Defining moments’ don’t come often. When they do, we need to be ready to rise to the occasion, to take risks, and to stand up for what is right. This is a defining moment. We must be ready. /15

As the disappointing results of last night’s municipal election are still settling in, I would like to propose a paradigm shift for progressives hoping to make some change for the better in Ottawa and hopefully across Canada. 1/
This will be a longer thread, but hopefully worth your time. And yes, it does eventually connect back to the Convoy and the OPS memo @_llebrun has just unearthed. It’s also about a lot more than just Ottawa. 2/
First, let’s get what happened out of the way. The detailed results aren’t out, but it’s no secret that the suburbs carried Sutcliffe to victory. Despite intense support for McKenney in urban areas the majority of Ottawans are surburban. 3/

A *lot* is happening right now in world politics but I want to focus in on what Chrystia Freeland has been up to and why everyone should be paying attention to her right now. A long 🧵
Chrystia Freeland has very publicly blown up Canada and the Liberals’ veneer of credibility on climate action and heel-turned the government into a very conservative fiscal agenda. I think this will take some weeks to be fully absorbed by the media and political system… 1/
…and still longer to penetrate the depths of the Twitter discourse. But this is a hugely significant moment in the life of this government. /2

One of the convoy social media figures had a Facebook live conversation with Diane Nolan, TUPOC board member earlier this morning. Here are a few observations… 1/
They are projecting a strong sense of calm on the whole eviction. In fact it barely came up in the conversation. I interpret this as a mix of faith and strategy. They believe that everything will be resolved and also don’t want to sow any doubts among their supporters. 2/
Instead the focus was on the movement and their vision. Nolan calls this a war and says that she is having “dreams and visions”. She’s charismatic. Charitably speaking, she’s a person of deep faith and conviction. Less charitably, she’s off her whole damn rocker. 3/

I too believe that the entire federal workforce should be leveraged to subsidize *checks notes* Bier Markt and *checks again* Mad Radish.

Maybe they could take a page out of Red Pepper’s book and start serving a new clientele, eh @boring_ottawan
Okay I watched the video and Fleury isn’t only griping about public servants not being around - though the premise that we need to *save* small businesses is itself flawed. Also pitching office conversions to residential units is such old news. It’s already happening.

🧵 This thread is for those who participated in the #BattleofBillingsBridge.

This was *the* defining moment of the occupation of ottawa and likely a very important moment in the political lives of everyone present. Let’s talk about it. 1/
Full disclosure, I was out of the country when this happened, though I was invited to a similar blockade that ended up joining up with BB. There’s no question that, had I been in ottawa, I would have been there too. But this isn’t a thread about what happened on the ground. 2/
In terms of the practical gains of Billings Bridge, there isn’t much to say. The group of vehicles that was blocked was relatively small and did not consist of the regular crowd that occupied ottawa throughout the week. It didn’t inhibit the occupation or their supply lines. 3/

This dude is so far down the rabbit hole that he thinks Canada’s fascist-apologist victims of communism memorial is being pre-built as a memorial to those killed by future Canadian communism.
As far as I can tell, no work has been done since that fence went up, despite Freeland giving them another $4 million in 2021. I’m pretty sure that money has embezzled its way to supporting other causes at this point…
