1/ More than 100 Russian convicts are being sent to the war in Ukraine from a prison colony in Kemerovo oblast, according to independent Russian media outlet Verstka, despite relatives' attempts to stop them enlisting with the Wagner PMC. Translation follows. ⬇️
2/ "Relatives of the convicts who are trying to ensure that the "volunteers" are not sent to the front told "Verstka" about the recruitment of prisoners in the colony IK-44 in Belovo.
3/ According to them, a PMC representative visited the colony on 28 October. The "man in camouflage" made a short speech and asked those "who want to go to war" to write applications.
4/ About 200 people expressed such a desire, but after interviews and selection 109 "volunteers" remained, who were placed in an isolated hut without communication with the outside world or the rest of the prison colony.
5/ "No one was forced, on the contrary, some were discouraged. Very young people in their 20s were even told they would only be taken in if they got permission from their parents. They also dissuaded any incomers.
6/ Four alcoholics were forced to take a run, after which they were told that they didn't need them," said one of the relatives, who wished to remain anonymous.
7/ The wife of another prisoner, Oleg Pecherskikh, who is serving a sentence for attempted murder, told Verstka that she is writing appeals to the Federal Penitentiary Service and the prosecutor's office about a criminal offence being committed in the colony.
8/ "My husband has been moved to a separate hut with the volunteers who are going to go to war from there. Yesterday he sent me a farewell letter through a comrade, so to speak. Their communication has been cut off and they cannot contact their relatives in any way.
9/ I got desperate. I called everywhere, the prosecutor's office, the Federal Penitentiary Service, the only place I could reach was the Human Rights Department. But they told me that he agreed to do it voluntarily.
10/ We don't know whether he agreed voluntarily or voluntarily-compulsorily – I do know that he wants to go home," said Olga.
Such appeals can help avoid sending prisoners to war, said Vladimir Klopotov, coordinator of Russia Behind Bars in Novosibirsk.
11/ "All these actions are illegal. Prisoners can only stay in places of detention; in fact, it turns out they are either escaping or being kidnapped.
12/ We recommend contacting the department of the Federal Penitentiary Service and the prosecutor's office because a criminal offence is being committed.
13/ In the European part of the country, there have been cases when inmates were removed from the list and kept in the colony in this way," the human rights defender explained.
14/ Relatives told Verstka that prisoners in penal colony 44 are offered a "standard package" - a salary of 200,000 rubles ($3,250), a pardon after six months, and 5 million rubles ($81,400) in case of death.
15/ According to the recruiter, "the survival rate is high, the losses are about 15%."
The founder of the Wagner PMC is businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin. The media previously published videos showing Prigozhin personally recruiting prisoners in the colonies.
16/ According to Olga Romanova, head of Russia Behind Bars, more than 20,000 prisoners from all over the country have already been sent to war in Ukraine. /end
1/ Another account of chaos among Russia's mobilised men near Svatove in Luhansk oblast has been published by independent Russian channel TV Rain. A group of mobiks was abandoned by their commander as soon as fighting started and they were accused of desertion when they fled. ⬇️
2/ TV Rain tells the story of Anton (name changed), a resident of Voronezh, who was sent to a mobilisation camp near Boguchar in Voronezh oblast on 23 September, the day after he was mobilised. His wife Tatiana says he received virtually no training, like many other mobiks.
3/ "Three times they dug trenches and three times they practiced shooting: twice lying down and once standing up," says Tatiana.
1/ Mobilised Russian soldiers sent to Svatove in eastern Ukraine are in a "critical situation," according to TV Rain: "without training, without ammunition and often without commanders who abandon them in the very first hours of the attacks". Translation follows. ⬇️
2/ TV Rain spoke to a soldier called 'Ivan' (a pseudonym) who has recently been on the front line. He told them:
"I was given [a military occupational specialty] of 'medical instructor' in a reconnaissance company, but in fact there were no teams.
3/ "They just sent us out as cannon fodder. They put us in positions, we had the Khokhols, the Ukrops, sitting 700 meters away, firing mortars at us."
1/ Mobilised men of the Russian 4th Guards Tank Division are sheltering in an abandoned house in Svatove without food or water after fleeing from the front line under intense Ukrainian fire that killed their commander. They are now being threatened with court martials. Thread ⬇️
2/ The independent Russian media outlet Novaya Gazeta Europe (NGE) reports that 27 survivors of the 6th and 7th companies of the 423rd Guards Yampolsky Motor Rifle Regiment are facing punishment for leaving the front line near Svatove in eastern Ukraine on 25 October.
3/ Three of the mens' wives have spoken to NGE about what has happened to them. Here's a translated summary.
1/ Did Wagner mercenaries execute one of their own men and try to extort the wrong set of relatives to sell the corpse back to them? The story of Sergei Serbezov suggests that Wagner's recruitment of criminals is leading to more crimes against their own side. Thread follows. ⬇️
2/ Serbezov is a Ukrainian citizen who was sentenced in 2020 to 9 years and 9 months' imprisonment for drugs offences. He was put in the IK-10 penal colony in Saratov oblast in south-west Russia.
3/ According to Serbezov's wife, IK-10 was visited by Wagner Group recruiters after the war started. They told the prisoners that they were being forcibly mobilised "whether they wanted to or not". If true, this is unusual, as Wagner seems to have relied on volunteers elsewhere.
1/ Russian targeting of power infrastructure in Ukraine has expanded to systematically hit open switchgear associated with hydroelectric power stations and the boilers of thermal power plants, in an attempt to reduce overall resilience, according to the Rybar Telegram channel. ⬇️
2/ In a series of posts, Rybar analyses the impact of today's missile strikes. It comments that the aim of the attacks was "to deprive the enemy of the opportunity to compensate for the energy deficit" resulting from previous attacks. The targets included:
3/ 💥 An open switchgear of the Kaniv hydroelectric power station in the Cherkasy region.
Rybar comments: "The hydroelectric power station is located on the middle reaches of the Dnipro, helps to compensate for the energy shortage in the Kyiv region ...
