I think there are many types of sects and not all of them are connected with a spiritual background. All that is needed is an underlying ideology that becomes all-encompassing, that rises above individuals. One trait they all have in common is the non-acceptance of criticism.
Those who are critical are attacked, ridiculed and marginalised.
