1/n Many thanks @MelissaFox26 for hosting this AM @FOX26Houston on some exciting developments for new RSV vaccines. RSV = respiratory syncytial virus affecting both seniors and young children esp infants and premature infants. A few things…
2/n for seniors especially those with underlying COPD or congestive heart disease at risk, but now 2 potential adult vaccines might be approved soon, one from Pfizer other GSK, think of it like your 3rd respiratory illness vaccine along with flu and pneumococcal pneumonia
3/n for infants a new maternal vaccine from Pfizer given in 3rd trimester of pregnancy provider 82% protection of newborn infants in first 3 months, and still protected after 6 months. Also there’s a new monoclonal antibody given at start of RSV season showing progress
4/n then there are additional RSV vaccines in development from Moderna (mRNA) and Novavax, possibly others so I’m expecting exciting developments, which will overcome a past failure in the early 1960s using a whole inactivated virus approach that resulted in immune enhancement
5/n the downside? I don’t think these vaccines will be low cost making those perfusion F glycoproteins usually is not done vis microbial fermentation like our @TexasChildrens Covid vaccines. So I’m anticipating big time equity issues.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…

Meanwhile…as Mother Nature gets ready to serve up a 4th major coronavirus epidemic/pandemic following SARS MERS COVID19, the US Congress gets set to do all it can to dismantle our biomedical scientific infrastructure and leave our nation vulnerable statnews.com/2022/11/01/wit…
And did I forget to mention (in no special order) monkeypox, Ebola, Marburg, Nipah, measles, leishmaniasis, mal de Chagas, now emerging due to a confluence of 21st century climate change, animal and human migrations, urbanization, mega cities, poverty, deforestation, antiscience
1/n Aside from the fact that it seems devoid of anything resembling science, a reason I’m concerned about the new GOP Senate report is its tone deafness to the fact that Covid is now the third major coronavirus epidemic/pandemic: SARS (2002), MERS (2012), COVID (2019)…
2/n Mother Nature is not being coy with us. She plans on hurling a new major coronavirus threat at us at least every 7-10 years. The next one is likely already jumping from bats to people or intermediate animal hosts and it’s just a matter of time before one catches fire…
3/n Unless we get serious at understanding - and at a very granular level - the bat ecology of coronaviruses and how and when they jump to gain critical mass we’ll soon experience a 4th major coronavirus epidemic/pandemic nature.com/articles/d4158…
My 2nd view: they know it’s total antiscience crap.
My 3rd: they don’t care, it’s about grabbing power, even if it means we never learn how covid jumps from bats to people. They’ll condemn us to future pandemics wsj.com/articles/covid…
Remember, WSJ is controlled by the Murdoch’s and @newscorp, similar to @FoxNews in the past they at least tried to wall it off and keep the BS nonsense and cesspool confined to @WSJopinion
In case you are interested in the real story of Covid origins, I’m attaching a series of papers beginning with this one @PNASNewspnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…
1/n Being asked about the 2 recent @biorxivpreprint articles showing levels of virus neutralizing antibodies look about the same vs BA.5 pseudovirus regardless of whether you received new bivalent booster vs same ol’ same ol’ booster. I’m not despairing just yet, here’s why…
1/n Many thanks @wolfblitzer for hosting me @CNNSitRoom re the triple epidemic of RSV, flu, COVID19 (and other respiratory virus pathogens). RSV coming earlier than usual, possibly because some kids exposed for the first time in more than a year or two
2/n infants most at risk: those with prematurity, underlying pulmonary conditions (e.g. BPD post NICU), heart and neuromuscular disorders. Also older adults with COPD, congestive heart disease among others
3/n new vaccines are coming but not for this season. So some infants at high risk might benefit from RSV pre-exposure monoclonal antibody Rx, but for most parents with young infants, I recommended working out a plan ahead of time with your pediatrician or pediatric NP….
1/n Many thanks @chucktodd for hosting me (with orange/blue @astros bow tie) this afternoon on @MeetThePress @NBCNewsNow re Covid now and what’s next in the coming months..
2/n first of all, right now Covid way down in the US down to 6 new cases per 100,000 residents per day in Texas, the best we’ve been at for a while. But I’m concerned re what’s coming down the road..
3/n in Western and Central Europe for example Germany France Austria Covid is surging. And when Covid surges there it usually means it will get here to the US in a few weeks, often beginning with the northeast
