@bdam555 @excelsi84 @configmgrdev @Anderson I can’t speak to the decision process led to the decision since I left. But I can speak to some of the challenges/tensions (1/?)

#configmgr #memcm #sccm #Microsoft #windows
@bdam555 @excelsi84 @configmgrdev @Anderson Historically - Microsoft has always been good at platform-ish things. Windows, Azure, System Center suite (sccm/sccm), visual studio. Things that are used to build things on top of, or things that run/contain other apps. (2/?)
@bdam555 @excelsi84 @configmgrdev @Anderson However Microsoft has not been as successful when 3rd party content is involved… think SCOM management packs. MOM was awesome when it came out with promises of great content/MPs. But even Msft 1st party MPs were few and lacking (I say humbly - owning one for years) (3/?)
@bdam555 @excelsi84 @configmgrdev @Anderson Win10 App Store - the same. Made sense. Great platform / great features. Lacking in enough participation by enough vendors to hit critical mass.
(4/?)
@bdam555 @excelsi84 @configmgrdev @Anderson Maybe to most perfect example is windows phone. Epic platform. Perhaps the best phone OS for it’s time. But not a good enough 3rd party content plan/story/execution.
(5/?)
@bdam555 @excelsi84 @configmgrdev @Anderson An intriguing analogy here is video game consoles and video games. #configmgr is a “great game console”, but you still need games. Same with windows / azure / w10 store / winphone. Killer platforms (game consoles), but lacking the “games” or even better “game pass”

(6/?)
@bdam555 @excelsi84 @configmgrdev @Anderson We were hoping community hub would be the “game pass” for #configmgr. But it had a couple challenges. One is getting enough content in it for people to be interested. But also getting it to be interesting enough that people create content. Chicken and egg. (7/?)
@bdam555 @excelsi84 @configmgrdev @Anderson But the bigger problem is keeping content safe/trustworthy. Given #configmgr can bulk deploy anything fast and easy - if malicious content ever got into the hub, and sent to customer prod environments… EEK!

This made most customers adverse to the speed/simplicity of hub. (8/?)
@bdam555 @excelsi84 @configmgrdev @Anderson So then we designed curation. But this is where MSFT struggles. It’s good at hiring and funding jobs for people that code and ship. It struggles to find/staff people focused solely on good content. (9/?)
@bdam555 @excelsi84 @configmgrdev @Anderson This was the case with asset intelligence in sccm which needed content experts to maintain it. The case with MPs in scom. And the case with application compat reports in windows analytics. Not in Microsoft’s dna.
(10/?)
@bdam555 @excelsi84 @configmgrdev @Anderson So the chicken and egg problem of content creation/interest, and the curation challenge - made the economics of Msft paying for it untenable - imho. But I still stand by the vision of it!
