1/ This story, of how Katie Quakenbush, gets away with a slap on the wrist for attempted murder of an unhoused guy who SHE was bothering with loud music and exhaust gets even worse.
2/ She wakes a homeless guy up with music and exhaust from her Porche. When he asks her to stop, she gets out of the car, shoots him, then drives away—never calling 911—to Taco Bell tennessean.com/story/news/cri…
3/ He had to have three surgeries. She says she's already been punished enough.
4/ The fucking gall

"Mr. Musk and his advisers have discussed adding paid direct messages — which would let users send private messages to high-profile users "

sounds like a super efficient way to get celebrities to abandon your platform!

Oh my god, what a fucking idiotic idea this is. On just one front, how often your company would be named in lawsuits and police reports involving celebrity stalking Image
So "actual verification" would totally disappear. Worse, people could pay for the check mark to impersonate actual celebs, journalists, scientists, etc. Image

“two Tesla employees told CNBC, workers at the electric automaker are pressured to help with projects at his other companies for no additional pay b/c it’s seen as good for their careers, or b/c the work is regarded as helping with a related project.” cnbc.com/2022/10/31/elo…
“Managers at Twitter have instructed some employees to work 12-hour shifts, seven days a week, in order to hit Musk’s aggressive deadlines…”
“The sprint orders have come without any discussion about overtime pay or comp time, or about job security. Task completion by the early November deadline is seen as a make-or-break matter for their careers at Twitter”

1/ Republicans really searching for a narrative other than "our hateful speech pushes people to political violence." Here's Senator @JohnCornyn RTing a CPB union account of a new bit of disinfo. The Canadian DePape was in US illegally. Only problem is...
2/ That assertion seems to lead back to a Washington Examiner opinion piece that asserts that since nobody has yet reported on his immigration status, "it seems increasingly clear that he was an illegal immigrant."

See how this works?...
3/ By this logic since nobody's yet reported if he was in US legally, or not, ergo, he's not.

CBP Union tweets this b/c it wants to promote idea that crime is caused by folks who don't have immigration status. Cornyn RTs it because he's a shameless hack.

1/ SCOTUS sure looks poised to getting rid of Affirmative Action. At least for BIPOC. The dirty secret is that the admissions processed is rigged on so many levels to benefit rich white kids. Great piece from @EvanMandery motherjones.com/politics/2022/…
2/ Harvard and other elite schools set aside so many spots for kids of donors, kids of alumni, kids of faculty, recruited athletes—including for sports like squash or sailing—that it locks up a huge portion of student body just for rich white kids. Image

Some 👀 details in here: nytimes.com/2022/10/20/bus…
So..converting that 14,500 people is...a lot. A premium subscription to the Atlantic costs $100, so it would bring in a lot of revenue (though not nearly as much vs costs). Still, evidently program only made a "small contribution" to the Atlantic's bottom line.
$9M in revenue (again, not profits) also not a lot. Dunno what the Substack headcount + contracts adds up to but...

1) Have been really worried about what fuel shortages in Europe might mean for global stability/democracy. Two pieces of hopeful news:
2) Conservation and mass acquisition of gas from everywhere but Russia has meant a big drop in prices, and it seems like supplies will hold through winter (though probably not uniformly) nytimes.com/2022/10/25/bus…
3) Europe being forced to wean itself from Russian gas and speed renewables could be a game changer re climate goals: nytimes.com/2022/10/27/cli…
