What can a language teacher help with? A thread on language learning and the use of teachers. Let me preface this by saying I don't think a teacher is "necessary", what I'm doing instead is explore ways in which they are useful. 1/5 #langtwt#languagelearning#studytwt
I don't think of teachers as guides or authorities - by this I mean that it should be the learner and not the teacher who decides what is the best material for them, in what order and how they want to learn things. 2/5
At A1/A2 level teachers can talk slowly using basic vocabulary - this can take the form of TPRS altho it's not necessary. Like everyone else, I also use the comprehensible input available online but a real human being is more fun to listen to and I feel more concentrated. 3/5

A teacher is also a guide to the lang's culture, esp. if you are learning one that is far away and hard to access where you live. A native's view on the history and habits of the people is a lot of fun to listen to and can help avoid lots of misunderstandings. 5/5

How important is speaking early in language learning?A thread on language learning. Most of what I'm writing here is based on Professor @skrashen 's work, the rest is based on my teaching experience. 1/8 #langtwt#studytwt
Lots of ads where the teacher/school promises to make you speak early. Be aware that this is tricky path; until B1/B2 you simply don't have enough vocab to maintain a convo. You'll just memorize some phrases and throw them at ppl, but you won't understand their answers. 2/8
I keep telling my students that there is little point in memorizing "Where's the toilet?" if you won't understand the answer. Even more obviously what's the point of "what's the price?" when you hardly know the numbers 1-10 (huge shout-out to price tags). 3/8
