In 2018 a joint team of Rwandan and German researchers was set up with the mandate to investigate the context in which these human remains were collected, the provenance of these human remains, but also to make suggestions related to what should be done with these remains.

The research collected important information related to the provenance of around 925 human remains from Rwanda that were brought to Germany. This provenance research revealed that these human remains originated from 13 districts of #Rwanda.

The first book on this research has recently been published, with the title "Human Remains from the Former German Colony of East Africa: Recontextualization and Approaches for Restitution.
