@SiegelAtty I was HOPING he would “hear us”, realize that we love the best aspects of this free town square, walk back the worst of his proposals, and just make the small fixes we really want.
But no; he seems determined to steer this place in an ELITIST direction.
Prove me wrong, @elonmusk?
@SiegelAtty@elonmusk What we kept hearing—from his ardent stans—was “awww, he’s just trolling; he wouldn’t REALLY wreck the place, or take it in a direction we don’t want; he’s just coming on tough before compromising (standard business tactic); it won’t be THAT bad, [etc]”.
Why Is College So Expensive? Blame The Powell Memorandum
“The Powell memorandum struck a paranoid tone that the ‘free enterprise’ system was a under merciless and sustained assault centered mainly on college campuses.”
“According to Powell…[college] campuses were nothing less than an injection system for radical ideas into the body politic, funded by corporate America itself, and they needed to be stopped, or else the free enterprise system was doomed!”
“The message was clear: education was a threat to big business. This led to the…divestment of big business from education, part of the…’revolt’ against taxes which precipitated a…shrinking of…America’s public institutions (except military/security and corporate welfare)….”
The Powell memorandum struck a paranoid tone that the “free enterprise” system was a under merciless and sustained assault centered mainly on college campuses. [It] specifically focuses the spotlight on America’s higher education system as the prime source of discontent.
If you take the memorandum’s argument seriously, America’s universities were virtual leftist madrassahs inculcating revolutionary fervor in America’s youth and doing it on corporate America’s dime.
What are the deadlines to return a mail-in ballot?
Ballots must be received by Mar 19, 2021 4:30PM CDT (the day before Election Day).
What are the ways I can return my mail-in ballot?
You can return your absentee ballot:
NOT by mail now (too late).
ONLY by hand delivery to your local Parish Registrar. Must be received by 4:30pm on March 19.
You cannot drop off your absentee ballot at a polling location on Election Day as the deadline to vote by absentee ballot is the day before Election Day.
Can someone else return my ballot for me?
If hand delivered by someone other than the voter, that person must be an immediate family member of the voter and that person must sign a statement certifying that they have the authorization and consent of the voter, and...
Especially Americans in their 30s to mid 60s—who are in their peak years for working and saving and investing (and who may be raising minor kids or grandkids).
And who may have a little sumpin’ sumpin’ of a pre-existing condition.
@mattybig6@Bigredtalk Those in this category (especially) should know that they (not to mention others whom they may later infect) are NOT invulnerable.
And that reasonable society-wide public health protocols protect them, their co-workers, and their kids—NOT just “grandpa and grandpa”.
@mattybig6@Bigredtalk And ALSO, by the way, that “protecting grandma and grandpa” means first protecting grandma and grandpa’s caregivers, helpers, ride share drivers, food deliverers, kids, grandkids, friends, co-religionists, etc.—and therefore protecting all with whom any of THOSE may interact.
ALSO: Most places that sell stamps sell them only by the pack. Shelling out that kind of money isn’t for everyone. And post offices do sell an individual stamp—but they’re crowded, and open during VERY limited hours.
SO many obstacles, with such disparate impact!
Accidental? 🤔
Any chance there will be some volunteer efforts to get a stamp to every voter? (We shouldn’t have to do that—but maybe we do.)
@KatherineGran2@RealJamesWoods@Bharm36 It’s good that you have been able to use absentee ballots “for certain reasons”.
This year, there are “certain reasons” why many more registered voters will need and should have access to this option.
(Illness, risk to own or family members’ health, lack of child care, etc.)
@KatherineGran2@RealJamesWoods@Bharm36 This year, there will be MANY new impediments to in-person voting.
For instance—if the kids aren’t back in bricks-&-mortar school yet & there’s no caregiver for them or for preschoolers, should we just bring all our kids along to the polls? (Will that even be allowed? Should it?)
@KatherineGran2@RealJamesWoods@Bharm36 “Why fix a system that has worked for years” FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF, whose own reasons for using absentee ballots have happened to meet the traditional requirements for doing so?
Because society faces a whole new set of challenges that will affect many OTHER people in new ways.
