WHAT IS ALEC? 🧵

Through ALEC, corporations hand state legislators the changes to laws they want that directly benefit their bottom line. Legislators and corporations have membership in ALEC.
Corporations sit on ALEC task forces and vote w/legislators to approve “model” bills. Image Corporations fund most of ALEC’s operations.
Participating legislators, overwhelmingly conservative Republicans, then bring those proposals home and introduce them in statehouses across the land as their own ideas and important public policy innovations—

CALIFORNIA lawmakers may ban ALL plastic grocery bags!
Yes, even the sturdy reusables we’ve been paying 10c for—then using for all our carrying, storage, and travel needs.

Let’s tell our legislators & Governor: JUST SAY NO to
AB2236 & SB1053!

Some points for use in debate: ⬇️ CA doesn’t need any more stupid, excessive laws that make life harder for normies. And neither do politicians, nationwide—especially in an election year!
So let’s tell the politicians—and the media that are pushing this in editorials—NO PLASTIC BAG BAN!
Some points to raise: ⬇️

Did you think all the far right wanted was “religious liberty”?

Ha ha, no. They don’t just want freedom to practice their religion/s. Their long term goal is to impose their beliefs on EVERYONE.

Listen to what they’re saying NOW! 1/x

“It's not enough to merely relocate to red states in order to safeguard our people, principles, and lifestyle.

Once we are there it is crucial that we create an environment that is so intolerable for those who fail to adhere to these values that they cannot coexist in our vicinity. We must crush their endeavors to sabotage our triumphs and make examples of those who try to. We must secure our strongholds against their nefarious, ruinous actions and belief systems. 5:13 PM · Jun 29, 2024

HOLIDAY PRO TIP:
The point of a gift is to please the recipient, not the giver.
You may enjoy making quilts or cuckoo clocks—but not everyone enjoys getting them. (OR your anger if they’re not as “grateful” as they “should” be.)
They may prefer the $$ you spent on materials— —in the form of a gift card they can use to get something they really want.
Or, if money is tight for you, a heartfelt note/handmade card is great. They’ll treasure it as much as—or more than—they would the sweater you think they “should” like just because it’s “made with love”.

The College Backlash Is Going Too Far
Getting a four-year degree is still a good investment.

theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/… “[T]he fastest-growing occupations that do not require a college degree are mostly low-wage service jobs that offer little opportunity for advancement. Negative public sentiment might dissuade some people from going to college when it is in their long-run interest to do so.”

@SiegelAtty I was HOPING he would “hear us”, realize that we love the best aspects of this free town square, walk back the worst of his proposals, and just make the small fixes we really want.
But no; he seems determined to steer this place in an ELITIST direction.
Prove me wrong, @elonmusk? @SiegelAtty @elonmusk What we kept hearing—from his ardent stans—was “awww, he’s just trolling; he wouldn’t REALLY wreck the place, or take it in a direction we don’t want; he’s just coming on tough before compromising (standard business tactic); it won’t be THAT bad, [etc]”.

Why Is College So Expensive? Blame The Powell Memorandum

“The Powell memorandum struck a paranoid tone that the ‘free enterprise’ system was a under merciless and sustained assault centered mainly on college campuses.”

hipcrimevocab.com/2016/10/05/why… “According to Powell…[college] campuses were nothing less than an injection system for radical ideas into the body politic, funded by corporate America itself, and they needed to be stopped, or else the free enterprise system was doomed!”

Blame The Powell Memorandum

[It] specifically focuses the spotlight on America’s higher education system as the prime source of discontent.

What are the deadlines to return a mail-in ballot?
Ballots must be received by Mar 19, 2021 4:30PM CDT (the day before Election Day).
What are the ways I can return my mail-in ballot?
You can return your absentee ballot: NOT by mail now (too late).

ONLY by hand delivery to your local Parish Registrar.  Must be received by 4:30pm on March 19.

You cannot drop off your absentee ballot at a polling location on Election Day as the deadline to vote by absentee ballot is the day before Election Day.

@mattybig6 @Bigredtalk We also need Americans to be alive and healthy.

Especially Americans in their 30s to mid 60s—who are in their peak years for working and saving and investing (and who may be raising minor kids or grandkids).
And who may have a little sumpin’ sumpin’ of a pre-existing condition. @mattybig6 @Bigredtalk Those in this category (especially) should know that they (not to mention others whom they may later infect) are NOT invulnerable.

And that reasonable society-wide public health protocols protect them, their co-workers, and their kids—NOT just “grandpa and grandpa”.

Do we have to pay a “poll tax” to have our ballots COUNT?
There’s something wrong here! ALSO: Most places that sell stamps sell them only by the pack. Shelling out that kind of money isn’t for everyone. And post offices do sell an individual stamp—but they’re crowded, and open during VERY limited hours.

SO many obstacles, with such disparate impact!

Accidental? 🤔

@KatherineGran2 @RealJamesWoods @Bharm36 It’s good that you have been able to use absentee ballots “for certain reasons”.
This year, there are “certain reasons” why many more registered voters will need and should have access to this option.
(Illness, risk to own or family members’ health, lack of child care, etc.) @KatherineGran2 @RealJamesWoods @Bharm36 This year, there will be MANY new impediments to in-person voting.
For instance—if the kids aren’t back in bricks-&-mortar school yet & there’s no caregiver for them or for preschoolers, should we just bring all our kids along to the polls? (Will that even be allowed? Should it?)

@KatherineGran2 @RealJamesWoods @Bharm36 Not everyone goes to grocery stores. And some go only at times when it’s less crowded and the situation seems safe because health protocols are enforced. If things look unsafe we can return later or another day.
But “Election Day” is a one-day deal (and some have only one hour). @KatherineGran2 @RealJamesWoods @Bharm36 And risk to voters’ (and their families’) health isn’t the only concern. There may be shortages of poll workers and venues—especially if last-minute disease spikes cause mass cancellations. (When it will be too late for states, counties, and individuals to arrange mail voting.)

If primaries are “postponed”, does that mean whoever’s ahead so far “wins”? 😏
Or will DLC leaders just pick the nominee? 😏
If primaries must be postponed, let’s figure a way to do them by mail and/or online, then same for convention.
Pushing each thing back a few weeks is FINE! ALL of the people MUST have a voice in nominations!
(BTW, all issues but the “convention” apply to downballot contests too.)

Realistically, we want to “postpone” crowded gatherings by more than a few weeks or even months—and we must have (FAIR) nominations well before November!
