For many years now, I have thought of moral bankruptcy as being a key factor in the state of affairs that is #Lebanon... Moral bankruptcy, hand in hand with financial bankruptcy & sociopolitical bankruptcy.
But today I realize I may have been misunderstanding

1/8
the whole affair all this time.
What we have at play is not moral bankruptcy, but crude moral corruption & depravity.
It is not that there are no morals, but rather that there is a conscious & deliberate violation of all things moral

2/8
to the point of celebration & glorification of said violation!
The depth of moral depravity is truly astounding, if one but dare look.
Deliberate humiliation, deliberate subjugation, deliberate celebration of both, deliberate violation of sacrosanct human rights

3/8
dignity & liberty, deliberate attack on life & livelihood, deliberate glorification of the corrupt, the killers, the thieves, the thugs, the warlords, the most vile & malicious that this 'society' has managed to produce.. regular & persistent displays of adoration

4/8
& deification of the worst possible type of human beings, blood stained beasts clad in suits raised up as the idols of past, present, & future..!

None of that is mere moral bankruptcy, but a conscious & deliberate act of moral corruption & depravity

5/8
in which a considerable many seem to gleefully participate.
Yes, I must today admit: it is not merely a top-down spew of depravity, but alas it is also a bottom up conscious scaffolding for the depraved.. a corrupted bacchanalia celebrating the violation of moral virtues

6/8
playing out across the fields of tragic death masquerading as life in the light of righteousness & honor, all while snickering behind the thinnest of veils of hypocrisy.

I still believe, strongly so, that the revellers in the streets are victims, enculturated & primed

7/8
to celebrate corruption, vice, & thuggery. But though victims they may be, they are nonetheless not so unwitting in their victimhood, & seem rather willing participants in this national moral debauchery, cheering on & celebrating the horrid displays of moral depravity...

Male ego fragility as 'anti-feminism'

Every day I see more & more self-avowed anti-feminists, proudly declaring their ideas & ideologies as some emergent call-to-action in the face of 'extreme' feminism & the (purported) threat it poses to family, society..
1/11
& the 'natural order' of things.

Perhaps the first remark to note here is that there is nothing novel or avant garde in being anti-feminist. This movement dates back to the mid 19th century, & emerged around the time that feminism first made its appearance.

That aside:
2/11
anti-feminism is essentially reactionary; it creates itself & positions itself as a counter to all that is feminist, placing itself in opposition to all the hard earned rights of women, in opposition to the struggle of securing & safe-guarding those rights, such as

As we move steadfast into #election season (which in many ways seems to be playing out as a sort of political mating season), I am noticing a rather interesting phenomenon, which some may find worthy of a research project/case study:
1/8
I believe there may be a direct correlation between the shrinking temporal distance to election day & the increased spread of public displays of absurdity.
You may say absurdity has always been our bread & butter (or bread & olive oil).
& that may be true, absurdity abounds.
2/8
But most of it is neither wilful nor premeditated.
However, as we move closer & closer to election day, there seems to be an effervescence of conscious creation & innovation of the absurd, put on public display for all to witness, celebrate, & participate in!

More than two years into a series of "unprecedented" calamities in #Lebanon, & despite a glorious stretch of uprising & rebellion, & countless moments of rage interjected with twice as many moments of despair, we remain frozen like so many deer in the headlights...
1/10
We are not frozen out of a lack of will or some self-inflicted incapacity.. We (& by "we" I mean a largely silent collective of anti-regime citizens) are quite simply proverbial deer staring down the headlights as they zoom flashing by one after the other after the other..
2/10
Just today, we mourn another victim of the Beirut explosion of Aug. 4, 2020. 600 days to the day since the explosion that tore half our lives apart, & we still count our victims!

Many speak of Lebanon's citizens suffering collective PTSD, but I'm not sure that's accurate..

This morning's timely #trivia

💫 Christmas 🎄

The oldest English language reference to Christams as the occasion celebrating the Feast of the Nativity of Jesus comes from Old English "Cristes mæsse" (i.e. Mass on Christ's Day), eventually becoming one word mid 14th C
1/10
Putting aside debated connections to pagan celebrations of the winter solstice (such as the Norse Yule & the Roman Saturnalia), the earliest known celebration of Christmas was some time in the 4th C, spreading to Egypt by the 430s & to England by the late 500s.
2/10
As there is no mention in the Bible of the birthdate of Jesus, with many sources in fact suggestion that his birth was more likely in spring than in winter, Dec. 25 was chosen for its symbolism rather than its historical accuracy

My earliest memory of a #ChristmasEve celebration comes back to me every year around this time...
I must have been around 6 or 7 years old, & we were gathered at a family friend's home in beautiful Ain Zhalta. The house was a short distance in off the main road..
1/5
There were pine & other conifers around it, all lightly covered with snow, though I don't recall much snow on the ground.
There was no electricity, & no generators polluting the lull of the eve. Nothing in the air but the scent of burning wood from stoves inside the homes..
2/5
Inside, there was so much cheer bouncing around the walls, adults chattering away about things we kids had no concern understanding, chestnuts roasting atop a Qatorji stove, & so much warmth..
We gathered around the Christmas tree whose lights had no need to flicker

🧵 What does it mean to live in #Lebanon these days?
1. Primarily, living in Lebanon means the thuggish regime has not yet killed you (through direct assassination, wilful incompetence, or just pure criminal negligence).
1/11
2. It means living hour-to-hour, or day-to-day if fortunate.
3. It means waking up with the following thoughts being your first of the day:
Do we have electricity?
Hot water?
Can I/ should I run the washing machine?
Do I have enough gas in the car in case of emergency?
2/11
& if that emergency involves getting medicines, will I be able to find the meds?
What if I go queue for gas & then a shootout happens at the station?
Did I get enough bread the other day? Should I try to get some today?
Do I have enough gas to do so?
