Another thing about #Andor is that Luthen calls Saw an anarchist implying to a US audience that he doesn’t believe in anything and is just in it for the chaos. But the reverse is more likely true. Saw is the believer who won’t compromise while Luthen is an accelerationist 1/5
Luthen believes the empire has to be provoked into brutalizing enough ppl to inspire a rebellion to overthrow it. While Saw sees the empires brutality everyday. Only Luthiens privilege let’s him think the empires cruelty isn’t obvious enough already. 2/5
What comes next isn’t a question Luthen seems to care about. But it’s central to the way Saw, a revolutionary, operates. It’s also why Saw is a difficult character for our media to swallow. #RogueOne underlines this when he distrusts and tortures an imperial turncoat 3/5
Unless the torturer is white (24, Homeland, Israeli TV) torture is shorthand in US media for “bad guy”. In Rogue One we’re meant to sympathize with an imperial who’s just switch sides instead of Saw who doesn’t trust the ex-Fascist. US media is invested in humanizing fascists 4/5
and undermining portrayals of revolutionaries, usually by ascribing to them brutal methods, mental instability or impossible goals. Whether it’s Saw Gerrera or Dany Targaryen. 5/5

So the basic problem with “showing” a military capability is you then give the enemy the basic info it needs to start to overcome, defeat, or subvert that capability. Much as MIRV, swarm, hypersonic, and decoy tech has made our anti ballistic missile tech obsolete. 1/6
We spent decades and billions on developing ABS and now it’s mostly useless except against the dumbest rockets, mortars, and ancient SCUDs. It was a huge WBush failure from withdrawing from the abs treaty that only enriched defense contractors 2/6
So “winning” a nuclear war requires near perfect immunity from the impact of the enemy’s nukes. Any tech short of continental force fields is going to demonstrate its weaknesses as well as its strength. Laser anti missile tech? Swarms, decoys, mirv, stealth, reflective armor 3/6
Saw Gerrera is the most compelling Star Wars character by far bc he hits upon something other SW media never addresses. What are the “Rebels” fighting for? Why overthrow the Empire if you just replace it with something just as unequal and oppressive but with a kinder face? 1/5
Saw isn’t a mercenary or an opportunist. He believes in a cause and that’s why accelerationists such as Luthen and ‘vote blue no matter who’ types label him an extremist. Saw wants to build something new 2/5
I’m not clear on Luthen’s motives, but it’s clear that if the empire fell he’d be well positioned with the power elite to enrich and empower himself. Just as Sen. Mothma would be well placed to seize power post empire. 3/5
