Given the crucial role Twitter plays in elections, this hasty rollout of the "pay $8 and get a blue tick" scheme seems very much like what a partly Saudi partly white nationalist China-supporting company would do to further create chaos during US elections.
I don't think it will work. A lot of early and mail balloting has happened already, at levels higher than 2020 or even 2018 when there was a 9-point #BlueWave the media ignored until well after the votes were counted.
This chaos will hurt the same day voting loving GOP more.
A blue wave is no bueno for mass media, esp TV media. Last 100 years, whenever progressives sweep into power, they get down to boring wonky shit like Medicare or healthcare or infrastructure or education or some such yawn stuff that's good for the country but not good TV.
Cable news saw a sharp decline after Obama took office, cos he got down to dour boring business of healthcare and cleverly kept wars going without a lot more US casualties, neither of which makes for compelling prime time news for those not political junkies.
It's not like all media bosses came together and decided to undermine Obama or promote kooks, like in the prescient movie The Network.
But with ratings dropping, they chased lurid stuff like tea party, "death panels", latest Palin rants, and of course, Trump's birtherism.
And that moved the GOP farther into the loony fringe, taking positions against George W. Bush openly! And going very much racist in attacks against a black president.
In chasing eyeballs and clicks, the media kept dividing the country. Cos polarization is good for ratings.
Same thing is happening with Biden, Schumer, Pelosi.
They have, objectively, gotten a lot done in 2 years considering the hand they were dealt. But it's a lot of boring shit that's good for the country so people watch sports or entertainment & news revenue drops.
And ad revenue starts going up for those who chase sensational stuff. Like that orange clown from NYC who until recently praised Obama to the skies suddenly saying Obama isn't even American? Outrageous!! Also, very watchable TV, the endless arguments with Trump over it.
My concern is less with what happens in the election and more on what happens after. MAGAland is already prepared for a bunch of election denial schemes if they lose.
Inflicting a bigger attack on the USA than pearl harbor, 9/11 combined, cos our elections are pretty solid!
Like really, seriously, US elections are an amazing hive being that cannot really be tampered with at the ballot box. They do a lot of tampering with gerrymandering & ID laws, but the actual conduct of US elections is remarkably historically solid, built over 200 years.
If you were an enemy of America, the BIGGEST lasting attack you can make is to destroy the credibility of its elections in its own eyes. Which is like getting Rafael Nadal to start thinking he is bad at tennis. It's batshit insane brainwashing.

I was first explained the representation based logic of reservations cogently & convincingly in my college days. I did not fully accept it until I was almost 30. Looking back, it was exactly what Kaustubh says. Wilful ignorance claiming some Austrian "first principles".
Our savarna pushback against reservations is breathtakingly duplicitous! We will simultaneously be like merit is the only thing and then also support reservations when they benefit us.
Simultaneously say casteism is practically dead and also say Brahmins are persecuted!
Why does that matter? That's when there's a gorgeous lighting display at the 1400 years old rock cut cave temple on JM Road.
Definitely go check it out if you're in town. First one since COVID I think
Pataleshwar Caves is one of those places that in any other country would get millions of tourists. It's such a gorgeous and historic place right in the center of the city. But any restaurant on JM Road gets more foot traffic than it.
I myself only visited them at age 36 tho I went to college literally right next to the caves and probably ate at every single restaurant and food cart on JM Road growing up.
But it took an Instagram post to make me visit. 🙈🤦🏽♂️
Just a reminder that there was no real activist pressure or boycott calls to advertisers on Twitter like @elonmusk is pretending.
Advertisers took this decision proactively. And twtr ads are a tiny 3% or less of their budgets anyway.
Fascism is bad for business, turns out.
If tomorrow Lachlan Murdoch whines about losses due to activist pressure and boycotts leading to companies not advertising on Fox News, at least there is a factual basis to the whine.
SCOTUS: We are going to undo Affirmative Action, a very effective representation policy, just to pwn the libs.
Supreme Court of India: Hold my gomu
But to explain for my US followers not into Indian politics, the Indian Supreme Court greenlit a quota of 10% for High Caste people from "economically weaker" families.
The line drawn at ₹800K, which is
- 5x of India's national per capita median income
- 50x the poverty line
To put this in US context, it's like if SCOTUS approved affirmative action quotas reserving 10% of all seats for white people making $250K or less.
It's the first Affirmative Action for historically privileged castes already at the top of the Indian socio-economic system. 🤦🏽♂️
Oooh, the other day I saw one fella walking up 1st Ave carrying a box that had UNMOGIP sharpied on it and knowing what that means, I sooooo wanted to stop him and chat. But he looked like he was stressed and late. Kinda like UNMOGIP itself.
The United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan or as kids on 1st Ave call it UNMOGIP is a department of over a hundred personnel there for over seven decades to "observe" if there are any violations of the ceasefire. Probably one of the less attractive sinecures
It's one of those many UN oddities straight out of an Ianucci movie. That group was created just for observation of the 1948 ceasefire. Very bureaucratic role. No real power or influence. And post 1972, pointless cos India's policy since has been 3rd parties incl UN, kthxbye.
NYC is an intimidatingly fitness conscious place to live in. Every time I go for a 4 AM walk around the complex, there's at least a couple of folks pelotoning or zumbaing by the big window in their apartment looking out. And at least a couple of runners. At 4 AM!
Of course we are a population full of professional and many times more aspiring models, actors, and most importantly, dancers in the 100 plus top tier stage shows Broadway & Ballet downwards. Folks who have to keep it tight to make a living.
Another thing I've noticed in the now 2 years plus habit of 4 AM long walks is, when people are doing something close to and facing out of their window, they almost always are looking towards either Empire State View or World Trade Center view. Like sunflowers for skyscrapers. 😂
