If Ford wants to change the channel on his assault on labour rights, he's going to have to swallow an F-150 during this press conference.
He looks and sounds awful during this presser. I hope he's feeling the pressure.
So far this presser is just bullshit provincial propaganda. I hope when media writes it up, they'll fact check all the horseshit.

This isn't about kids in class. The deal wasn't good. CUPE workers have been screwed for years. They're fighting to catch up.
Clearly this presser is just about framing the issue ahead of CUPE's later today.

To hell with Ford and his bullshit. #GeneralStrike
Ford doesn't respect workers. He doesn't care about workers. He cares about his business cronies and power. Don't buy this framing.

He never negotiated in good faith. That's untrue.
Ford says he's willing to rescind s.33 and the legislation if CUPE stops the strike.

Holy shit.
In other words, the Ford government is willing to back down, at least for now, in the face of overwhelming and broad labour pressure and public support for workers.

Keep the boot on the government's neck, folks. It's working.
"Chat is disabled for this live stream"

Indeed. Image
Ford ends his remarks with "God bless the people of Ontario."

God isn't with you, Doug.
Ford says he had no other option to use s.33 to keep kids in the classroom.

How did that work out for ya bud?

He had another option: Give CUPE workers a fair deal.
Ford is doing his folksy bullshit bit right now. Just scat avuncular nonsense. Next.
I wonder if Arthur will make an appearance?
Ford says he doesn't regret how he approached this. But he's willing to ditch the legislation and s.33. So...maybe some regrets, Doug?
Ya fucked up, bud.
Kids do need to go back to the classroom. Ford is right.

He should offer education support workers a fair deal so that kids can get back to learning.
Ford keeps calling the CUPE demands unreasonable. Go back ten years and tell me how much those workers have got. It's sweet fuck all. And their base salary is low. They're struggling to get through the day. During an affordability crisis, no less. That's what this is about.
Oh, the greenbelt comes up! Can Ford be believed and trusted after he flip flopped?

Answer: (He can't be believed or trusted.)
Anyway, he doesn't answer the question. *shocker*
"Where are we going to put 300,000 people a year?"

I dunno man? Ever try density?
Ford pushed again: Is he credible? Why should unions believe what you say?

Ford calls himself the best partner unions have ever had.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

no
This guy is so full of shit he should come with a sewage processing plant.
Oh mention of Minister Lecce -- while he has a job, at least.
Now on to the Emergencies Act inquiry. Why isn't Ford showing up with Jones?

Ford repeats the word "federal" 1,000 times and then runs and hides under the podium.
The real answer is he screwed up and is hiding now. Because he's a coward.
Ford asked if he'd enter binding arbitration. Says he'll rescind s.33 if CUPE ends the strike. Then they'll hit the bargaining table.

So, that's a no.
Ford asked again about the EA inquiry.

He says the word "federal" so many times it's like when you repeat a word and it starts to sound weird.

Clock, clock, clock, clock, clock, clo--
Last question. Trudeau was critical of Ford's use of s.33. Were his wittle feeling weelings hurt?

Ford is disappointed that Trudeau is selective about s.33 use (QC dig there).
Ford is open to a constitutional changes talk with all premiers and Trudeau but recommends he doesn't.

Yeah, no kidding.
Well, that's the end of that. Anyway, it's 5 o'clock somewhere amiright?
In summary: Ford overplayed his hand. No one supports him. He's losing the framing war. He's backing down and labour pressure is working. He's hiding from the EA inquiry (FEDERAL!) because he'd look bad. He's flip-flopped on the greenbelt 'cause he's scared of tall buildings.
What a Wednesday it's turning out to be.

I'm embarrassed to admit it took me a long time to come up with a formulation for Doug Ford's politics but one coalesced today while I was researching populism for an article.
Doug Ford isn't a populist. He's a clientalist. He's a right winger and that informs his politics. But he also creates relationships of exchange in the right wing universe between electoral constituencies in return for support, narrowly serving those sectors through patronage.
Accordingly, Ford doesn't care about "the people." He cares about his people and the relationships he can build with them for his success. Of course he wants to help people. His people and himself. Spolier: you probably aren't one of them.

That is...a lot of union heft on one stage. You love to see it

Solidarity.

*millions* of private and public sector workers represented on that stage, CUPE national president Mark Hancock says.
Hancock confirms Ford will rescind bill 28 -- and thus the s.33 use.

As long as we’re making up Twitter policy on the fly, I think any account that gets ratioed on a tweet by more than 4:1 should be suspended until the owner completes an American-gladiator style gauntlet challenge.
Actions have consequences. Make them fight.

I cannot stress enough how critical this moment is. If governments in Canada can smash the constitution and legislate away the right to strike, collective bargaining rights are dead.

If collective bargaining rights die, workers across the country are goners.

That means you.
This is a critical juncture.

The way of the Ford government is the way of oppression, austerity, and suffering.

The way of solidarity and union rights is the way of better jobs, better pay, and better lives.

Choose carefully.

#GeneralStrike
Don’t fuck this up, people. And don’t let the government and its right wing water carriers divide you by pretending they care about students. They don’t. They care about themselves.

I'm so excited to share the first episode of my monthly Substack podcast 'On Work', featuring the legend himself: @elamin88.

This is a podcast about how people work. Their routines, rituals, tactics, strategies, and more.

Listen below and sign up today!

Please note, I get the name of *my own* podcast wrong, calling it On Working. It's On Work. But what a fun little Easter egg to start with.

Also, twice I say we're ending the chat but keep going. Well, folks, Elamin is just that good. There was more to say.

I hope you enjoy!
And a special thanks for @MeaghanDerynck for her audio expertise -- she produced and edited.

If the government was legislating you into a multi-year pay cut (during an affordability crisis), how would you feel?

How about if you made $39,000 for critical work that made education possible and safe?

Everyone should stand with CUPE education workers.
And if your private employer is screwing you in a similar way, that’s not an argument to throw CUPE workers under the bus.

It’s an argument for higher unionization rates in the private sector and for solidarity across the board.
The fight against Doug Ford’s strike-busting, constitution crushing bullying is a fight over rights for *all of us*.

Do the right thing today and you’ll be working to protect your own rights for tomorrow.
