1. Where should I turn if I want to learn about paid media?!?

A friend who has been out of the game a bit just asked me this.

I put together a list of resources for him that I thought was very handy so I wanted to share.
Here is how I broke it down:

- Newsletter Reads

- Influencer Follows

- Contrary Thinking

One rule - I tried not to have a person in 2 places. It was harder than I thought!
Note: each of these people are impactful on every channel above but have one that I believe they are BEST IN CLASS ON.

Sometimes ads can be simple...

Now let's break down this ad from Disco
First thing, simplicity is powerful in your ads, just like something more complex can be.

Remember, you are creating an AD STACK, and experimenting with what works for your brand.

Important thing to note: things that didn't work 3 months ago, might work now and the opposite.
Now onto the good stuff.

What we liked:

- Casting, this guy is incredibly relatable. He could be 25 or 45, we don't know.

- The organic/native feel of the ad.

- Using the product in a real-life situation.

Why does an ad work? That is the question...what's the answer?

Here's an ad from Ritual and a breakdown of its best/worst parts.
What's great:

- Amazing hook, that's in reverse. That catches my eye.

- It very directly calls out the WHO, WHAT, WHY that the customer needs to know.

- transparency on ingredients

- don't underestimate how much good music can set the tone for your customer's experience!
Note: This is very pretty but could be less slick and still remain incredibly effective because it follows such solid fundamentals.
