Great article by @JJCarafano.
Highlights 🧵

“For centuries, small powers across Europe and Asia have never had a chance to chart their own destiny. That could be changing with help of Europe & the USA.”

“This future can, and in some respects is already being realized, through four interrelated projects: the European Three Seas Initiative, the reconstruction of Ukraine, an international effort for a “free and open” Black Sea, and the Middle Corridor.” @JJCarafano
2/11
“Together, the enterprises comprising the #EurasiaProject will serve as the new backbone of prosperity linking East and West.” @JJCarafano
3/11
“The upshot is that in the modern world not all great powers are equal.” @JJCarafano
4/11
“Some make more promising partners, not only bc they are willing to be actual partners and not overlords, but also bc together they have the abundance of global capital to invest, represent huge markets, and advanced technological and engineering know-how and capabilities.”
5/11
“Private investment and wealth creation, not dependence on the government and outside aid, should be at the center of Ukraine’s reconstruction strategy.”
@JJCarafano
6/11
“No country that has transitioned from poverty to economic prosperity has done so through foreign aid; it has done it by implementing pro-growth, free-market policies that unleashed the entrepreneurial zeal of its own people and drew in billions of dollars in foreign inv.”
7/11
“The much-touted post–World War II Marshall Plan was a limited aid program centered on reviving the private sector. The largest recipients of reconstruction aid over the past decades—countries like 🇦🇫, 🇮🇶, and 🇧🇦—have all failed as states.” @JJCarafano
8/11
“The Three Seas Initiative could provide the investment infrastructure 🇺🇦 needs and at the same time develop projects that better integrate the Ukrainian economy into the Eurasia project.”
@JJCarafano
9/11
“The major obstacle to the rapid rebuilding of 🇺🇦 is that reconstruction will be hijacked by govs, International Institutions like the World Bank & the self-interested aid industry, locking the country into debilitating aid dependency and eventually eroding its resilience.”
10/11
“Greater reliance on the Three Seas Initiative development fund as an alternative instrument of reconstruction is one way to combat the West’s impulse to rebuild wrong.” @JJCarafano

“The Taiwan legislature recently passed a double-digit increase in the defense budget; Taiwan is now on pace to spend more than $19 billion on defense in 2023. But China spends more than $200 billion a year.”

🧵 Highlights 1/11

theatlantic.com/magazine/archi…
“This has prompted calls for a shift in Taiwan’s defense priorities. Instead of building large, conventional hardware (airplanes, tanks, submarines), military experts have urged Taiwan to focus on so-called asymmetric capabilities.”
2/11
“Asymmetric capabilities: anti-ship weapons, surface-to-air missiles, stockpiles of small arms and ammunition, which have served Ukraine well in repelling a larger invader.”

Pologne.
France's pro-Polish propaganda.
18th century version. Image
Explanation: It is a map of all the territories that have belonged to Poland throughout history.
Full disclosure:
This is a completely 🇵🇱 map in fact. It was published in Paris, but the author was a Pole working at the 🇵🇱 library.
It’s funny to see that his masterpiece still gets the desired effect.

Brief anthropology of 🇫🇷 French geostrategy and its court spirit: a short reflection on the deep roots of French foreign policy mistakes.

Why did France fall behind the United Kingdom, which was four times poorer and less populated in the 17th century?
Why did Louis XIV fail to see the value of settling Canada and building a powerful navy?
Why did he absorb France in endless European wars?

Why did Napoleon III allow Germany to reunify? Why did France abandon its European security architecture only 7 years after the signature of the Treaty of Versailles? Why did she hand Poland over to Germany in 1939?

If we look at the facts and stop listening to the rhetoric, 🇩🇪 Germany's strategy is perfectly clear and consistent: fund and develop the enemies of the US 🇺🇸 while taking advantage of the security it provides.
It has a name: betrayal.
🇩🇪would make "mistakes" if nobody warned it. There is too much déjà vu, too much unheard criticism, too much stubbornness, too much disregard for the danger it exposes the rest of Europe and the West to. At some point we have to understand how we are being deceived.
Russian gas was not a foregone conclusion. Neither is trade with China. 🇩🇪 is the richest country in Europe. 🇫🇷 humbly agrees to get indebted, but Germany has to count every penny (ruining its banking system and practically bankrupting the Deutsche Bank in the process).

Jan Błoński on Witkacy and the Western World:

„Society treats art, religion, philosophy purely instrumentally, using them for its own needs ... or does not concern itself with them at all. This is bc the aims of the individual & the aims of society are completely divergent.”

„The goal pursued by the species is maximum socialisation, that is, the organisation of human society in such a way that it can satisfy its basic needs and at the same time master the contradictions of its own structure.”

„All culture (or at least that which is most valuable) has been created by non-average individuals driven by the will of superiority. With time, however, it become more difficult to distinguish oneself from the crowd.”
