This is probably gonna be one the best threads you'll see about internal and external linking

I'll be answering these questions and sharing my strategy 👇

What is the ideal number of internal and external links to add to each blog post?

Who should you link to externally?
What is the thought process that goes into adding internal links to a piece?

How do you determine anchor text for links?
On a recent podcast with Erin Balsa, I said that most of the hard work of creating great content happens in the planning stage and by extension, the content brief.
I like to think of on-page optimization when creating a content brief, and that includes adding suggested internal and external links
To answer the questions I kicked off with...

There is no ideal number of anything in SEO. Wikipedia is proof of this.
I prioritize internal links first by linking to:

✅ The most important pieces in the cluster, especially the pillar page

✅Supporting content outside the cluster that aligns with the message in the current content.
✅CTAs to relevant products and features

✅In-text references to existing content that provide value
Here's how I determine the anchor text:

Wait until Google has indexed a piece of content. Then use the primary keyword and other keywords the page was indexed for as anchor text.

We always want variety.
The thought process for deciding what to link internally is determined by the subheadings in the article.

Right off the bat, I can see what already exists, and add those as suggested internal links. This is besides the obvious choice of linking to other pieces in the cluster
For external links, I NEVER link to direct competitors or websites like Wikipedia where anyone can publish and edit content.

Frase and NeuralText do a decent job of scrapping statistics referenced across the top 20 ranking content for a keyword.
I prioritize linking to statistics from industry sites like Tech Radar, and websites known for publishing peer-reviewed content like Science Direct, Sage Pub, and Frontiers. Also data-led sites like NNGroup and Statista.
I'll also link to quotes from industry experts and thought leaders with great E-A-T on the topic as a way to drive home a point I'm trying to make.
The final stage of internal linking happens after I've written the content. I use the Link Whisper WordPress plugin to find more opportunities for useful internal links.
The worst thing you can do is link arbitrarily.

In all you do, remember that links must provide value as a source of continuous education for the anchor text

A few other things to remember:
Avoid links in the introduction to reduce bounce rate
Don't use the primary keyword as anchor text on the same page
You only need to link once to a page
The final link should be a CTA telling people what to do next
If you want a way to track when Google indexes a post and the keywords they've picked it up for, Ahrefs has a free webmaster tool that does a great job of sending reports of new keywords ranking position 11-50

Use that keyword information for internal links and link building

How to fall in love with a brand before creating content assets for them

A thread🧵
There's a lot of groundwork that happens before building content briefs

The first thing to do is to take time to understand the brand and its story

I call this the first step in planning - falling in love with the brand and becoming an advocate.
I can do this by taking the time to learn about:

- Why the founders created the brand
- The biggest problems they face
- Their personal experiences with the problem
- Existing solutions
- The problems with existing solutions

A few years ago, I reached out to Joel about his course. I wanted it so badly but I couldn't afford the price which was $200 at the time.

I asked Joel if he would break the payment into four.

He was kind enough to give me his course for free and it changed the way I handle... Image
sales calls.

Fast-forward a few years later and I have deja-vu when a BIPOC writer reaches out to me asking for a payment arrangement so they can afford my course.
There's a lot of guilt in there because I know what it's like to want a high-ticket course that can help you upskill and not be able to afford it.

In March I conceived the idea for the Tech SEO Cohort when I realized that most Black and Brown skin folks in the FCDC community didn't know what tech SEO was.

They signed up for mentorship thinking it meant writing technical content optimized for search.

But we realized that..
Most were specializing in content because they thought it was their only option.

Content had minimal barriers to entry, so they went for it
I was also dissatisfied with the lack of diversity in SEO, specifically the absence of Black people in:
Major publications like Search Engine Journal and Search Engine Land
SEO events
SEO awards (except when they're dishing out token diversity awards)

#40DaysOfContent - Day 9

A universal truth I've seen on blogs that dominate search consistently is that they write with active sentences

Here's what I'm talking about👇
An active voice...

✅Puts your reader in the moment and makes it easy to understand your message
✅Turns your CTA into a command

✅Evokes stronger emotion and engages the reader

✅Moves the plot along and keeps you in control of your writing

#40DaysOfContentLessons - Day 6

This is the most important lesson I got from manually reviewing over 400 blog posts

Your ultimate goal is not just to rank, but to enter Google's circle of trust

That's because ranking is easier in the circle of trust

Let's dig deeper👇
You can rank for crazy competitive topics by adding one h2 around each keyword

OR

And this is the one that blows my mind

Google gives you a bunch of rankings for keywords you weren't even targeting because they are part of the cluster
Remember the keyword example from yesterday?
HubSpot is also ranking for that keyword

They rank for a total of 57 keywords with 37 of those keywords on page one

The content was written in 2018 and it's not that good (I know because I saw better content on page 1)

How to win at SERP with minimal effort

You can win a ton of SERP real estate by optimizing your headline and h2s for multiple keywords

This is tricky because you don't want to be caught with your pants down doing keyword stuffing
But you also don't want to write more content than you need

So, how do you make the decision?

First, look at the SERP

Are there any sites ranking for multiple keywords by optimizing their headline?
In the first example, you'll notice that Wordstream is ranking for two keywords by optimizing the H1 headline for it
