THREAD: Around Nov 4, Sudipto Sen's promo for the upcoming film #TheKeralaStory was trending. He shared the clip and wrote, "Soon u’ll get to see a film which u never imagined, in ur remotest imagination."
Why was #TheKeralaStory trending? There is a tested appetite for such films. More specifically, the actress can be heard saying that 32,000 girls have been converted to Islam and sent to Syria and Yemen.
Actor Adah Sharma shared the clip with #TrueStory. As it turned out, many people took it for face value — including various news outlets.
It's worth noting that in 2018, director udipto Sen released a documentary 'In The Name of Love — Melancholy of God’s Own Country' which also presented the same number — 32,000. web.archive.org/web/2022110814…
In 2021, Sen, citing ex Kerala CM Oommen Chandy, said every year approx 2,800 to 3,200 girls were taking up Islam. He added, "Just calculate it for the following 10 years, and the number is around 32,000.” Case of poor maths or propaganda? We can't say.
In reality, acc to a 2012 India Today report, Mr Chandy never gave an annual figure. He said, 2,667 young women converted to Islam in a span of 6 years, between 2006-12. indiatoday.in/india/south/st…
More crucially, according to India Today report "Chandy said that there was no evidence for forced conversions in the state and the fears about love jihad were baseless."
Thus, it is evident that Mr Sen's claim that former CM Mr Chandy made an alarming testimony about women joining ISIS from Kerala is categorically false. If it was the case, it would have been breaking news.
Fun fact: We also found another promo for #TheKeralaStory where Sen has misrepresented the words of another former CM VS Achuthanandan. The promo shows a 17-second clip of former CM VS Achuthanandan. Guess what? The eng subtitles had no similarities with what was being said.
The erroneous translation has also been pointed out in the YouTube comments. One such user took the pain to provide the literal translation- something that Sen and his team of researchers did not do.
On Nov 5, Aravindakshan BR requested Central Board of Film Certification to place a ban on the film unless director Sudipto Sen and producer Vipul Amrutal Shah submit documents confirming the veracity of the information presented in the teaser. thenewsminute.com/article/journa…
No news report or study backs the 32000 data. Sen said that he will share that data after his film releases. We will update the article in case his research is authentic.
BJP leaders @amitmalviya and @TajinderBagga tweeted a clip with a misleading claim and yet again spread misinformation after Nabanna Abhijan took a violent turn on Sept 13. Here is a fact-check for @AltNews by @Indra_Calcutta and myself.
At the Chittpore crossing, a few steps from the famous Royal Indian Hotel, BJP supporters clashed with police. They beat up an unarmed ACP and fractured his arm. They also set a PCR van ablaze. All this was caught on camera.
Usual suspects @amitmalviya and @TajinderBagga tweeted a clip of a man in a skullcap throwing a stone and claimed he was a TMC cadre attacking the cops. No explanation for how they IDed him. Of course, the PM can ID protesters by just looking at their clothes.
