Democratic Rep. Elaine Luria has been defeated in her bid for re-election in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District. #Election2022 Image
VA-2 is one of several House districts that election experts pegged as a ‘bellwether’ district in terms of determining which party will ultimately control Congress in 2023.
Though she has served in the House since 2019, Luria gained greater national prominence as a member of the January 6 House select committee. Notably, Luria is now the 4th of the select committee’s 9 participants who will not be a member of Congress in 2023.
Rep. Liz Cheney was defeated in a bid for re-election during the Wyoming GOP primary in August, and Reps. Stephanie Murphy (D-FL) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) elected to retire rather than face potential defeat in their own prospective bids for re-election, as well.

Voters in Maryland approved a ballot question that will legalize recreational cannabis for adults 21 and older, starting in summer 2023. Medical weed has been legal in Maryland for close to a decade.
With the new measure, individuals with past convictions for behavior that is now legal will be able to get their records expunged.

A new UN report released at COP27 says that corporations, banks, and cities that make net-zero pledges are greenwashing. Image
The report is from the UN High-Level Expert Group on the Net Zero Emissions Commitments of Non-State Entities, which was formed by UN Secretary-General Antònio Guterres at COP26 in Glasgow last year.
At a conference where the report was released, the group’s chair, Catherine McKenna, said, ‘Too many of these net-zero pledges are little more than empty slogans and hype.’

‘Bogus net-zero claims drive up the cost that ultimately everyone will pay,’ she said.

On November 8 at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, French President Emmanuel Macron called for a complete ban on deep sea mining. Image
While other countries such as Costa Rica, Chile, Germany, France, Spain, and Panama have called for ‘precautionary pauses,’ Macron’s announcement marks the first time any nation has called for a complete ban on the practice, according to nonprofit conservation news org Mongabay.
While the detriments of deep sea mining haven’t been thoroughly studied, concerns exist, such as the fact that stirring up sediment on the seafloor could spread toxic metals. There are also concerns that the lights and noise from mining machinery could affect sea life.

Pennsylvania's Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman has won the state's open Senate seat, according to projections from NBC News and ABC News, among other outlets. #Election2022 Image
Fetterman's victory over GOP opponent Dr. Mehmet Oz is a massive boon to Democrats' hopes of retaining control of the Senate overall, as it flips a seat that is currently occupied by a retiring Republican, Sen. Pat Toomey.
The face-off was one of the 2022 midterms' most bruising races, with both candidates directly attacking the other on a number of fronts.

Voters in Michigan are projected to have approved Proposal 3, which establishes a constitutional right to abortion and other reproductive services in the state. #Election2022 Image
The constitutional amendment would take effect 45 days after Election Day and also negate a dormant 1931 state law that outlawed abortions as a felony punishable by up to four years in prison or $5,000 in fines.
Other Michigan laws regulating reproductive health care, such as requiring parental consent for minors to obtain abortions, would seemingly remain open to court challenges by advocacy groups, who say the restrictions are unconstitutional.

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom cruised to re-election in California, with the Associated Press and several other sources calling the race shortly after 11 pm ET. #Election2022
This is Newsom’s third electoral victory in 4 years. In addition to winning a first term in the 2018 midterms, Newsom fought back a heavily funded recall effort by state Republicans in 2021, as well.
As governor, Newsom has tried to position himself as a national leader for Democrats against Republican extremism, especially on the issue of abortion rights in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision last June.
