I think this election result feels so surprising and buoying because it's one of the first times in my adult life that Republicans seem to have paid a significant electoral cost for their extremism.
If MAGA Republicans significantly underperform regular Republicans, it vastly improves the prospects of defeating fascism electorally.
The results in Michigan, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin governor races are huge cause for optimism.
If MAGA Republicans bare no cost for their extremism -- and do as well or better than replacement level Republicans -- we're completely fucked. But, this cycle at least, it seems like they underperformed dramatically.
The one (potentially enormous) note of caution: DeSantis does seem to have figured out an evolution of the MAGA formula.
He might not have the juice to defeat Trump in a primary, but his version of semi-fascism seems more palatable to a general election electorate.
One more takeaway: at a minimum, voters did not recoil from Democrats' focus on defending democracy and defeating fascism.
The warnings may not have helped, but they certainly did not hurt.
Let me put a finer point on this: it seems like MAGA Republicans paid a significant cost for supporting Trump's attempt to overthrow the government.
That's an enormously important result for the future of American democracy.
Ryan Zinke, Trump's Secretary of the Interior, is locked in a tight battle in MT-1 in a R+7 district. MAGA superstar Lauren Boebert is possibly headed for defeat in a R +6 district.
Even if Boebert and Zinke pull it out, those races have no business being close.
MAGA's defeats tonight have two very important implications:
1. it's much more likely the 2024 election will be free and fair (in WI, AZ, MI, PA), and
2. Trump's ability to choose nominees is weakened.

In the past hour, Elon Musk has retweeted three pieces of pro-Jan 6th conspiracy theory propaganda.
He's gone full MAGA.
Elon joins Tucker Carlson in pushing vile pro-Jan 6th insurrection conspiracy theories.
The big difference between Elon Musk and Rupert Murdoch is that Elon is younger.
I personally think it's bad the richest man in the world is pushing pro-insurrection conspiracy theories on the influential social media platform that he has total control over.
Halli is an award winning designer whose company was acquired by Twitter.
Halli was born with muscular dystrophy in a working class family. He chose a higher tax rate for the sale to pay back into the Icelandic social system.
Halli seems like an absolutely amazing dude. He was named Iceland's person of the year in 2022. Just look at all the incredible stuff he's accomplished.
Elon Musk, on the other hand, is not an amazing dude. It's just despicable to treat people this way.
The Injustice Democrats consisted of five billionaire-funded PACs that worked together to defeat progressives in primaries.
Overall, the five groups that make up the Injustice Democrats spent $44,454,111 on outside expenditure this cycle to defeat at least 24 progressives.
We've heard a lot about SBF's support for Democrats.
But, I found that over 75% of the money SBF contributed to Democrats in 2022 went to groups that spent nearly all their money on competitive primaries in the Democratic Party.
Elon Musk is really doing an incredible job educating the public about how capitalists end up aligning with fascists to maintain their wealth and limit the power of the working classes.
When given the choice between their workers having a union and paying more in taxes OR supporting authoritarianism, many American oligarchs will choose tyranny to protect their profits.
Yesterday, Musk went to Brazil to meet with Trump ally Jair Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro, who defends Brazil’s military dictatorship, says Musk buying Twitter is a “breath of hope.”
