Today is the day we will find out friends! I'll be live tweeting here. Parents, educators, students, and community members will attend the meeting and speak.

You can also follow along on the live stream here:

@greated @One_Colorado @lizjmeyer

1/x
Here's some more background on what to expect from today's meeting. We'll see the birthright doc introduced again, as well as some efforts to restore and expand representation of minoritized groups in the standards.

2/x
Signs aren't allowed inside of the meeting room, but when board members walk in today, they'll see these messages!

"Inclusion matters!" "¡La inclusión importa!"
"¡Nuestra communidades IMPORTAN!"
"Teach our history!"
"Restore the cuts!" "¡Restaurant Los Recortes!"

3/x Cardboard signs left outside the Colorado Board of Education
The Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition worked to make sure these messages were heard ahead of today's meeting.

There are more parents who want history class to be diverse and inclusive than there are who don't. The right doesn't have ownership over "parent's rights".

4/x
This is real grassroots. Not astroturf.

@ColoradoSPC

Board is seated, and 61 are tuned in to watch online. I'm getting no audio so far. Are you?

On standby now.

8/x
Meeting has started but we are having some technical issues on the live feed, should be running in about 15.

Proponents of #RestoringTheRevisions for #diverse #inclusive education have packed more than half of the room.

9/x
Since I'm remote going to link to another live tweet thread from a reporter in the room for now !

10/x
First speaker is up. This person is from Independence Institute and called LGBTQ inclusion a violation of parental rights.

11/x
Second speaker is from a local chapter of FAIR, a national conservative org, asking the board to adopt the version of the standards that cut references to LGBTQ and BIPOC people. Says that include people who look like students is reductive.

12/x
Alejandro is up speaking on behalf of Colorado students. Says manufactured fear drove the development of the June version of the standards.

13/x
The next speaker Tally highlights how generic language of "diverse peoples and cultures" erases their identity as a trans woman. Tells personal story of survival through a childhood where trans people were omitted. Asks the board to honor HB1192 and restore the revisions.

14/x
Reina, a trans high school student from Cherry Creek speaks powerfully, quoting Silvia Rivera and says queer students are silenced as their history is erased. Says this is history that needs to be learned by EVERYONE. Shares a personal experience of hate crime at school.

15/x
Reina concludes. ""To be so negligent [of student safety] should be criminal!"

This while board member Durham is on his iPad.

16/x Conservative CO Board of Education member is on his iPad whi
Gabe spoke next, speaking extensively on the importance of HB1192 and asking the board to protect Colorado's future and honor the house bill.

17/x
Rona, curriculum expert, says LGBTQ & students of color need to see themselves and their families in the FORMAL curriculum. Says that early in school students become aware of their marginalization.

Students who are not marginalized are harmed when encouraged to hate.

17/x
Summit County School leader, speaking on behalf of the district, cites the districts concern about erasure of LGBTQ+ and BIPOC people.

We support "honest, comprehensive, and fact based" content, and recognize that "with historical honesty comes societal discomfort."

17/x
Some messiness in the sign up. Speaker concedes their time to Tiffany, asking the board to "continue on the right path", and include history that is reflective "of the good and the bad".

17/x
Speaker conceded time to Tiffany. Who asked the board to move forward with history standards that reflect both "the good and the bad"

18/x
A parent of a student in Cherry Creek speaks next. Talks about the difference it made when people at the school community supported her when she came out. Says that patriotism isnt about a lapel on a pen, or waving a flag, but about enacting those values in our day to day.

19/x
There's some discussion about who is up next, and some technical work getting interpretation set up.

20/x
Fletcher is up, a public educator of 17 years and Colorado native, says standards are "tools to guide instruction" at their best, and "unusable political grandstanding" at their worst. "If we do not restore these revisions, standards will be further politicized"

21/x
Points out the irony of naming Stalin in the standards, then redlining groups on later pages.

"As a straight white male, people like me are overrepresented. If we don't specifically name these groups" they will continue to be omitted.

22/x
A little more drama about the speaker order, lots of people want to speak.

23/x
Maria is up next, speaking in spanish. Has students in Boulder school district, "I'm here so we don't erase history. As an immigrant... I ask the board to please not erase history, please don't make these cuts. Let's talk about respecting history.

24/x
"Right now, there's many schools with marginalized people, I would like for you to advocate for this more strongly. There are people who do not feel like they belong to the school, we already know this country was built by many immigrants."

25/x
"Thats why I am here, I care about my children's education, history, and democracy. I take care of these lands, of people who were cast out, I ask you to take responsibility here in Colorado and please start creating good history for our generation."

26/x
@ColoradoSPC is up, with a speaker that acknowledges the board meets now on stolen land, and says "all children deserve to see themselves reflected in all stages of their educational lives" Asks the board to #restorethecuts. Points to how important this is at early ages.

27/x
@ColoradoSPC @ColoradoEA is up. Emphasizing that all students must see themselves reflected in the totality of their school experience. Says they have visited with parents and students around the state and that there is palpable fear. Asks the board to trust educators and @HonorHB1192

28/x
Durham leaves during emotional testimony.

29/x
Shauna, parent and business owner, speaks in solidarity with the groups present at the meeting today, and asks the board to #RestoreTheRevisions. At the same time, pushes the board to further expand inclusion of Pacific Islander communities.

30/x
Mikayla, a queer Colorado student, speaks up about not feeling supported in school. Says learning about diverse groups pushes all students to think more critically. Explains the background of the 1192 commission.

"Celebrating multiple cultures" is about "safety"

31/x
Katie is here too, another student. Says race was always difficult for teachers to talk about. "A part of the human experience is having an identity", speaks about the way 1192 can support teachers to hold this space.

32/x
Tells the story of how her sister brought a book that presented Black American perspectives to school, and how within just a few days a classmate wrote a hateful slur in the book.

33/x
A mom of two young elementary students is here, with support of her husband, in support of #RestoringTheRevisions. Says it is "a rightful expectation as a taxpayer that children are taught about the world that exists. LGBTQ people exist and contribute in powerful ways"

34/x
Moving onto READ Act stuff

35/x
Lunch break!

36/x
Back from lunch with item 14.01 related to science assessments.

37/x
Rule making next. Then back to the social studies standards.

38/x
Okay! We are onto the social studies standards!

39/x
Short break.

40/x
We are back. First a vote on the revisions to social studies standards as they relate to HB1192.

Commisioner (?) making a few comments. Acknowledging that it has been a long road. Expresses appreciation for deep public engagement.

41/x
Also thanks the CDE staff, legislators. CDE staff start a slide show with amendments ahead of the vote. Board members have a memo w a copy of amendments, and recommendations in line w 1192.

"Required the inclusion of histories, contributions, and cultures of minorities"

42/x
Livestream up and running here:

43/x
Recaps process, highlighting multiple periods of public engagement. Chair asks for the number of public comments received.

Numbers since April are recapped. Oct 20th - Nov 9th at 9 pm another 90 emails.

"I think it is fair to say we've heard from thousands" Chair says.

44/x
Chair Schroeder, "The amendments are to the June version. As we go through, I recommend you make a motion in totality by board member."

Durham is asking procedural question about rules.

45/x
Chair Schroeder asks Durham to begin. His amendment runs from 4th-HS. Can't really hear what it was...Something about MLK. Did someone catch that?

Fails on party line.

46/x
Durham proposes another amendment, again related to Dr. King, which is struck down on party lines.

(Opponents of diversity and inclusion commonly mischaracterize the civil rights movement in service of exclusion)

47/x
Durham says "its hard to understand why people would not want to talk abt Dr. King's desegregation strategies" & tries to characterize proponents of HB1192 as "encouraging division". His motion passes 4-3.

Recall nonviolent movements were met by violent mass resistance.

48/x
A board member pushes back and says they aren't opposed to discussing Dr. King's work. The opposition is to the phrase "overcome segregation" which "implies segregation is over."

49/x
Chair Schroeder says, you got it in 7th grade, I voted for it. Some back and forth there.

50/x
Durham dropped the "CRT" bomb, then says he doesn't know of "any instance where discrimination is legal" now that he thinks about it.

His motion fails 3 to 4.

51/x
Durham doing the same motion for every single grade, trying to codify into the standards a mischaracterization of the civil rights movement.

52/x
Board member Escarcega is up. Escarcega moves for amendment numbers 7-20 as presented on board docs.

Durham requests severance of amendment 7 and requests a roll call vote. Let me get you the list from board docs...

53/x
Escarcega gives a little context about her process for developing amendments. "First, amendments are reflective of the majority of feedback we heard." Talks about talking with community around the state, and how in general, it matched up with what we heard this morning.

54/x
"What you see in my amendments is what you see in the original social studies committee report or the 1192 report" with one exception. "It is not all of the revisions, it is not just saying I want the Nov version back" Explains this is after work with some experts.

55/x
"One new piece I put in was the inclusion of Pacific Islanders." This was a request the board got, and this is a federally recognized group.

56/x
McClellan thanks Escarcega for the thoughtful proposed amendments. "I will be voting yes." Expresses gratitude for member Escarcega's efforts and outreach.

56/x
Amendments are on board docs: go.boarddocs.com/co/cde/Board.n…

57/x
So, we aren't getting allll the references back. Escarcega explained that this is because the groups are listed at the top part of the standard, and so the implication is that it carries through.

58/x
Durham takes issue with some of Escarcega's amendments starting in p-K. He's and other board members are flipping through.

Schroeder says these don't apply to high school.

They ask Durham to clarify whether he has a single issue.

59/x
Durham tries to suggest that LGBTQ inclusion in p-K is including "sexual" content.

Schroeder says item 7 doesn't have anything to do with that.

Durham says 9,11,12,13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 do.

Escarcega reads 1192 back to Durham.

60/x
"The obligation to teach about the histories and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people is NOT the requirement to teach comprehensive sex ed."

"We have law that backs us up on that."

61/x
Escarcega says families are in p-K. You acknowledge families where kids have two moms.

"You are attempting to have students realize they have their own rich heritage and backgrounds that they can share without fear."

"This is NOT sex ed. Its never been about that."

61/x
Member Esser gives the example of kids sharing family photos at school.

62/x
Durham cites a video he brought in, and says he was going to bring a video of a drag performance today to say it does happen and says he considered it "child abuse".

Audience: Wow. Wow okay.

This is all part of coordinated messaging around the country.

63/x
McClellan talks about the power of the greeting "I see you." Shares an anecdote about how her daughter went to a friends house who had two moms & her burning question was about what the snacks were.

64/x
Scheffel delays the vote. Saying that "there can be highly sexual content." Says companies will make explicit curriculum.

Escarcega says local boards look through & review.

CDE explains that there is always follow up after standards adoption to support implementation.

65/x
Schroeder says "And I will say school boards will share with parents their curriculum. Thats where some of these decisions will be made, we are not the curriculum folks."

66/x
Someone tries to say there isnt curricular transparency. Schroeder says thats where elections come in. (Dems again held control in this week's meeting)

Esser says everyone in D7 can get the curriculum.

67/x
They called the vote. Escarcega's motion to #RestoresomeofTheRevisions passes 4/3.

68/x
On to some more motions from Dr. Esser!

Those pass 4/3.

69/x
"TO meet the requirements of HB19-1192 regarding the inclusion of american minorities in teaching of civil government" I move to adopt the ... AND THE FEED CUT OUT

70/x
Okay that one was about adopting a version of the standards that restored Nov revisions to the elementary standards in accordance with the amendments proposed today.

The motion passes 4/3 and there is applause from the audience.

Quickly tut tutted by Chair Schroeder.

71/x
ONTO SECONDARY

72/x
McClellan says, "In the holocaust and genocide studies, I move to adopt amendment 1". This is adds the word "fascist" before German Nazi Party to "ensure that facts about the Nazi party are not obfuscated."

Durham supports the amendment, but then quotes Hitler. 😐

73/x
The amendment passes unanimously.

74/x
Another amendment from McClellan to restore genocides in Rwanda, Darfur, and Bosnia to the standards.

It is seconded and the motion passes unanimously.

74/x
Another motion to restore Darfur, Rwanda, and Bosnia genocides to the standards passes unanimously.

75/x
Rankin makes a motion about how feelings in the standards, using "for example" instead of "including but not limited to". It passes 6-1.

Seems like the intent is to make sure teachers don't HAVE to teach SEL? Not sure..

76/x
Rankin makes a motion to do the same thing in front of every mention of LGBTQ/BIPOC bc "when teachers are under pressure of time" they will "cut other other types of diversity." Says BIPOC/LGBTQ inclusion is "institutionalized discrimination."

This would break statute.

77/x
Scheffel is about to reintroduce the American Birthright standards.

78/x
Some irony (?) in saying students need to understand how history repeats itself? Scheffel is talking about methodologies for studying histories, suggesting that the CO standards is "one sided" by saying "view, construct, and interpret" repeatedly.

79/x
Makes a motion to "replace our standards with the American Birthright standards"

Its seconded by Rankin.

80/x
Schroeder says, "I'll say what I said before, there's too much missing."

"The fact that Fordham rates our standards low is in large part because we are not free to include curriculum. "We will always be in that position."

81/x
McClellan says she thinks the Colorado standards should be reflective of the year of work that the Colorado committee put in.

The motion to replace the CO social studies standards with American Birthright fails on party lines.

82/x
Schroeder is introducing her amendment about the Sand Creek Massacre.

"It was the brutal murder, by government employees, of a certain race of people."

"I don't want people to think that it is in the 'other' countries that this happens. Cruelty is cruelty."

83/x
The motion to add the Sand Creek Massacre to the standards passes unanimously.

84/x
Escarcega makes the motion we've been waiting for!!! To adopt the document on board docs called "Redlined Copy of Full Social Studies June 2022 and State Board Amendments"

We did it everyone. Motion passes 4/3.

85/x
Emotional testimony giving thanks to the board.

86/x
YESSSSSSS!!!!!
Ok signing off, but we aren't done! We have some amazing standards to build from moving forward, and health standards review on the horizon.

Thank you all.
