The reception has been a little mixed, but I'd say that there are encouraging signs of progress for food systems here at #COP27. (1/19)
Firstly, there's the prominence of food systems: in the negotiations (through Koronivia), on the official programme, in the official UNFCCC side events, and in the multiple Blue Zone Pavilions. Nutrition, specifically, is playing a major role - spearheaded by @l_haddad (2/19)
Secondly, there are signs of progress on Koronivia. True, some of the work has been pushed to March '23 / SB57 / COP28. But there is momentum on taking a food systems approach, incorporating diets and food loss and waste, & strengthening integration with policy mechanisms. (3/19)
Thirdly, the Food and Agriculture for Sustainable Transformation (FAST) initiative is a great example of a clear action agenda that we can all coalesce around. (4/19)

Crucially, FAST builds on progress to date such as the Glasgow Breakthrough, Methane Pledge, and the AIM4Climate work driven by the USA and UAE, which has attracted $8bn since its launch at COP26. (5/19)
And then, of course, there's the Initiative on Climate Action and Nutrition (I-CAN). (6/19)

I-CAN is a huge deal. It formally recognises the bidirectional relationship between nutrition and climate change. It links human and planetary health. It brings a holistic view to health, nutrition, and climate change. It is the embodiment of a One Health approach. (7/19)
The Initiative sets out guiding principles for member states, financial institutions and the private sector. It shows four clear action areas and examples of projects already underway which support our shared goals. (8/19)
It will support policymaking that simultaneously improves nutrition and triggers transformative action to achieve healthy diets from sustainable food systems. (9/19)
As the incoming COP28 Presidency representative of the UAE said, this is an initiative that we should be proud of. But we can't rest on our laurels. (10/19)
We have the science. We have the urgency. We have the solutions. We have the innovations. We have the ingenuity. (11/19)
Through FAST, I-CAN, Koronivia, NDCs, NAPs, UN Food Systems Transformation Pathways, and N4G Commitments, we have all the right mechanisms for implementation. (12/19)
Now, and onward to #COP28, we must look back on a year of real progress and tangible milestones - just as we can celebrate AIM4C and many other leaps forward today. (13/19)
As @DrAndrewSteer so rightly said: Food is the problem. Food is the victim. Food is the solution.

And what a solution it can be. (14/19)
If we get this right, food systems, agriculture, forestry and land use can become a powerful carbon sink - reversing the terrifying trajectory of climate change, while bringing huge benefits to people, planet and prosperity. (15/19)
The tools are in our hands. Let's continue building on this momentum by taking this global agenda to national and regional level - through the work of the Transformation Hub, EAT-Lancet 2.0, and our collective efforts in countries around the world. (16/19)
It's time to see the change: on the ground, at scale, at speed. It's time that the blah-blah-blah turns into support and funding for the people leading the charge: the farmers, fishers, and food value chain actors around the world. (17/19)
Above all, this is a success of multilateralism. This is why we work together. Huge thanks and credit must go to the @COP27P Presidency, @UNFCCC, @WHO / @WHOEgypt, @FAO, @IFAD, @EATforum, @UN_Nutrition who pioneered I-CAN, and the many others behind FAST and #Koronivia. (18/19)
On a personal note, I'm delighted that @GAINalliance has played its role and that we are part of this movement at COP27. (19/19)
