Born in a traditional Garhwali Rajput family on August 19, 1941, Rawat turned out to be one of the finest examples of Garhwali valour. On Nov 17, 1961, during the battle of Nuranang, Rawat fended of the Chinese army alone for 72 hours. Rawat had captured an enemy MMG with + Image
2 of his comrades: lance naik Trilok Singh Negi and rifleman Gopal Singh Gusain. Both his comrades attained Veergati while returning after capturing the chinese MMG post. Rawat was also injured, but managed to reunite with his company with the captured weapon. While his company + Image
was ordered to retreat, grievously injured Rawat refused to leave the position to provide cover fire to his retreating comrades. Waves after waves of PLA attacks were thwarted by Rawat alone. He as assisted by two local girls for supplies, one was killed and another captured + Image
It was until 300 of the chinese lied dead, one of the suppliers was captured by them. Then only they got to know that they were facing One Single Indian soldier since last 72 hours. Frustrated and humiliated by the unsuccessful attempts, the Chinese then stormed Rawat’s post+
Chinese had returned the severed head of Jaswant Singh Rawat after the battle. His final moments are yet a mystery. Some reports claim he shot himself with the last bullet he had, some claim he was captured and tortured and killed by chinese. His memorial is there at Arunachal Image
Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat is celebrated to be The Man who saved Arunachal Pradesh. With his indomitable will and veins of steel, he paved way for reinforcements and prevented attack on his retreating comrades. The Chinese were flabbergasted by the courage of Rawat. Image
