Not just the war in Ukraine. It is no longer a superpower, and aside from the absurdist threat of nuking every major city on the planet, it is hardly effecting the world's political flow.
2/ Culturally, there's a couple of indie rock groups, a top tier ballet troup, chess masters and (of course) hockey players. Nobody reads Russian books, not even those translated. Movies?
Name three from Russia. Okay, name just one.
3/ South Korea is of course drowning 'em out. So too Bollywood (India) and Nollywood (Nigeria), with Hollywood (US) still being the envy of an outclassed and near-bankrupt entertainment industry.
4/ Much like Saudi Arabia the primary reason Russia is part of the G20 is fossil fuel exports. Not bulk plastics nor finished good, but raw materials.
In many ways Russia’s single major (potential) asset is developing latent Arctic oil fields being opened up by climate change.
5/ But. But? But won’t happen if investors pull out of oil due to acknowledgement of oncoming #CCSS. Since it is increasingly impossible to deny to save the planet, obviously this oil is unburnable. Therefore no point in building all those oil-drilling platforms and pipelines.
6/ By one estimate, these oil fields worth $500 billion.
Too bad Russia could not access 'em in the 1980s/1990s. The USSR would have been able to balance its books, remaining a solvent petro-based dictatorship like Saudi Arabia.
7/ So what now?
Economically, by most projections, Russia will end up about 2/3s of Spain's GDP by 2040.
Someone was asked how to compare Germany GDP to Russia GDP in 2040
after ROFLing a couple minutes, the economist suggested simply, "DELETE A COUPLE OF ZEROES"
8/ Instead of oil, what can Putin take control of in order to prop up his faltering dictatorship given oil is less and less certain of being sold at $75/barrel.
Hmmm. Food.
9/ Yeah. Food.
Turn Russia into the world's breadbasket. But to really grab onto significant political clout, Putin needs to impose control over one or more cereal grains: wheat, corn, barley, rye, etc.
10/ So by invading Ukraine as a first step to restoring a 'Russian Empire' what Putin gets to do is control another heavy weight food exporter.
1/ When it comes to planet-wide crisis no wonder so many people’s mental model being so badly mistaken. Lack of basics.
Where is Pakistan? What's their problem with India?
Where is Ukraine? What's their problem with Russia?
2/ Then there's "globalization". Pollution reduction. Workplace safety. Bank fraud. Coal ashes being radioactive. Money laundering. Why reducing the number of births leads to better lives for women and higher income.
General state of ignorance.
3/ They could hardly be blamed given how reactionary their elders had been in providing a broader education to 'em as children.
But when it came to 'current events', less excusable.
1/ imagine there is a man whose beliefs are as inflexible as bedrock, having become the ultimate Puritan, so much a religious fanatic, when he arrives in heaven, upon meeting God...
2/ ...and there He is sipping a heavenly beer and savoring barbecued beef ribs listening to Elvis Presley + Billie Holiday + Janis Joplin up on stage rocking 'n rolling...
3/ well then that Puritan fellow just arrived in paradise knowing better than anyone else what purity 'n piety looks like, starts giving God a lecture about evils of drinking and how there's the bad kind of music that should never be played by the wrong skinned folk

1/ Should we pity the Republicans, obliged to be facing their collective mortality? A literal "end of the world as we know it" b/c the world has been changing so much whilst they did little to adapt?
No. Don't waste your pity.
2/ The Republican Party has decided better to tear down the entire American economy AND wreck democracy AND abandon millions to starvation-homelessness-illness rather than lose too much more power.
3/ Theirs is an opposition to any significant change because at this point all changes in demographics-technology-culture-economics weaken them.
apparently there is indeed at least one chatty turncoat who ratted out some of T(he)rump's amoral schemes 'n illicit dreams with sufficiency of damning evidence to convince a federal judge to sign off on warrants
maybe, given his family's long string of investigations; trading in Clan Trump to protect Clan Kushner from extended Club Fed vacations
as well, positioning himself within the GQP as (uhm) whatever he is good for
3/ Ivanka Trump?
very likely as payback for all those creepy callouts due to her father's borderline pervert hands 'n nausea inducing witticisms suggesting she was not just a 'daddy girl' but his '4th wife'
