As #COP27 draws to a close, time to reflect on the process and outcomes from a human rights perspective:
1) Despite historic decision on #LossAndDamageFund, governments failed to commit to a phase out of all fossil fuels--inevitably leading to more devastating rights impacts.
2) #COP27 once again shows governments’ collective failure to treat the climate crisis as what it is: a human rights crisis.
3) One of the main ways to incentivize governments to deliver more ambitious climate policies is public pressure. But during #COP27 climate activists have been subjected to intimidation, harassment and surveillance: ohchr.org/en/press-relea…
4) Let’s remember the context: #Egypt hosted COP27 following years following years of intensifying restrictions on human rights & environmental groups, severely curtailing climate activists’ ability to carry out independent work: hrw.org/news/2022/09/1…
5) #Egypt's brutal crackdown on civil society and harassment of environmental activists has taken attention and resources away from the need to achieve ambitious climate action and created an environment of fear for all activists speaking out at #COP27: hrw.org/news/2022/11/1…
