Amazing meeting with youth leader Ivanna Khrapko of the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine (FPU) who has organized millions in humanitarian relief for the Ukrainian people. #ituc22 Image
Kyiv has only 2-3 hours of electricity a day, and Kherson has none. FPU is mobilizing to raise money for generators, medicine and clean water.
The fight continues—the first train to Kherson ran yesterday and the railway workers are standing strong.
We must uphold rights and conditions for Ukrainian workers as they continue to wage, and win, this war.

You know what’s dangerous, Sec. Pompeo? Weapons of war that kill Americans on our streets, classrooms, grocery stores ,houses of worship & nite clubs. That's why teachers fight for gun safety laws that will outlaw weapons of war like AR-15's.  My thread 🧵americanprogress.org/article/guns-a…
What's dangerous is hate speech & rhetoric like this — calling what teachers’ teach “filthy” and comparing them to a cruel dictator who has engaged in genocide. That's why teachers press for & create safe & welcoming school environments 4 all our students nbcnews.com/news/us-news/n…
Disinformation is what's dangerous. Denying our kids an opportunity to learn honest, accurate, age-appropriate history, which their parents overwhelmingly say they want them to learn…even when the topics are challenging.  time.com/6172216/public…

I know that Mike Pompeo is running for president, and frankly I don’t know whether to characterize his characterization of me in the @daveweigel interview as ridiculous or dangerous.
At the state department, Pompeo defended Middle East’s tyrants & undermined Ukraine. He was more focused on pleasing Trump than fighting 4 freedom, national security & democracy. To compare us to China means he must not know what his own department says state.gov/reports/2021-c…
So Mike, let me make it easy for you. We fight for freedom, democracy, and an economy that works for all. We fight for what kids & communities need. Strong public schools that are safe and welcoming, where kids learn how to think & work with others. That’s the American Dream!

At #ituc22 I thought it important to honor the traditional custodians of the land, elders past present and emerging as well as those murdered and injured in yet another mass shooting, this time at an LGBTQ club In Colorado on Trans Remembrance Day Image
At #ituc22 in speaking about the new social contract, I recalled the first ever lesson taught was Locke’s theory of a social contract- how government needs the consent of the people to protect basic rights and the common good.
As a global labor movement we dream of a *much richer and far bolder* social contract with workers’ voice, social equality and climate justice at the center.

In a year when kitchen table issues, democracy and our freedoms were on the ballot, Americans turned the tide from a red wave to a swell of support for progress and problem-solvers. My monthly column here: aft.org/column/voting-…
Leading up to the midterms, I had my doubts. I spent the weeks before the elections talking to voters and traveling on the AFT Votes bus, rolling through a dozen states with more than 50 stops. aft.org/column/voting-…
In a year when extremists sought to wage culture wars in our schools, end results showed a deep well of support for the promise and potential of public education and the investments parents want to help their kids. aft.org/column/voting-…

Yet another tragic mass shooting with a weapon of war waged this time, like at Pulse against the LGBTQ+ community. Hate + guns = death. #EndGunViolence nytimes.com/live/2022/11/2…
Please God, help the victims, and condolences and prayers for those who died . Gratitude to those who subdued the killer and to the emergency responders..
This begs the question; how much more before weapons of war are banned on the streets, in our schools, in churches, supermarkets and nightclubs?

I had a great day in Montana today! Thanks to @MTnurses & @MontanaFed for having me. I started the day at the #MNA2022 Collective Bargaining Assembly where I had a chance to speak with nurses who, like many other union workers, are fighting for respect and dignity at their job. ImageImageImage
As I told @MTnurses: Every single person in this state, at one point or another, needs a nurse. And nurses want what patients need. But that requires respect, dignity, and economic power, which can only be accomplished through collective bargaining. #RetainMe #MNA2022
Next, I joined a group of women from @MontanaFed on a special tour of the Montana State Capitol. Thank you to Martha, a retiree, for showing us the amazing art in the building that commemorates the contributions Native communities and women have made to the state. ImageImageImage
