In today's #vatnik soup I'll continue discussing propaganda and disinformation. During the information age, winning the online propaganda battle can be just as important as gaining the advantage on the traditional battlefields.
1/11
For example, 🇺🇦 is pretty much dependent on the modern weaponry from the West. These weapons will be delivered as long as the people support these efforts. If people either lose interest or start resisting them, the war will be prolonged and 🇷🇺's war efforts become stronger.
2/11
Propaganda and disinformation are by no means new phenomena. Textual "fakes" have been around since the invention of writing, and already in Ancient Rome propaganda was spread through poems and texts imprinted on coins.
3/11
WW1 was the first war in which mass media played a significant role. Propaganda in mass media had two goals: keep up the morale and keep the people informed about what occured on the battlefield: bl.uk/world-war-one/…
4/11
In WW2 the efforts to demonize the opposite side became a popular thing. Nazi Germany depicted British troops as cowards and Russians as dehumanized beasts. Propaganda leaflets that contained demoralizing messages were dropped to enemy territories from planes.
5/11
Even programs like Lend-Lease required the support from the people, and this required effective propaganda.
In Russo-Ukrainian War, we haven't really seen any technological breakthrough with propaganda and disinformation efforts.
6/11
Photo and video editing are still the most common way to spread disinformation, even though we saw some
creative use of video game material at the early stages of the war. We've seen photoshopped cocaine on Zelenskyy's table, Same Hyde's face on a Russian passport...
7/11
... fake Ukrainian fighter jets in MH17 related satellite images and Argentinian lawyers depicted as the "Ghost of Kyiv". There's also been a lot of images and videos where the context is changed. A video from military exercise in 🇫🇮 was descritbe as an preparation for war. 8/11
Photoshops are easy, fast and cheap to produce and they spread quickly around social media. Videos require much more effort, but we've seen a few. Crude and unbelievable deepfake video of Zelenskyy surrendering surfaced in March, 2022.
9/11
In the near future, most photos and videos will be done by AI. We already have algorithms such as Stable Diffusion and Dreambooth that create realistic looking photographs, and these algorithms become better all the time.
10/11
In near future, we will have interfaces that take commands such as "Ukrainian soldier burying a civilian in a forest" and then go on and create a
realistic depiction from this description.
That will truly be the age of confusion and mistrust.

In today's #vatnik soup I'll discuss the "decadent West" and how the USSR and Russian policies has affected their culture and society. One of the most persistent narratives that the Kremlin has touted is the collapse of Western civilization. 1/12
Based on their propaganda, this is due to straying from "traditional values" and promotion of gender equality, human rights and multiculturalism. This is by no means a new thing - "the decaying west" was already portrayed in Russia in the 19th century. 2/12
This trope evokes weakly defined concepts such as "tradition", "family values" and "spirituality". Russia considers itself as a counterweight to Western decadence and this is one of their key narratives in disinformation campaigns conducted in the West. 3/12
In today's #vatnik soup I'll introduce a KGB agent and a billionaire who disguises himself as a holy man.His name is Vladimir Mikhailovich Gundyayev, but he's better known as Patriarch Kirill. Gundyayev is a close ally of Putin and he has called Putin's rule a "miracle of god" 1/8
Historian Felix Corley published a study titled "The Mikhailov Files: Patriarch Kirill and the KGB" in 2018. This document revealed that in his past life Gundyayev was actually a KGB agent: academia.edu/37152767/The_M…
2/8
Gundyayev, who has often said that religious people should live a modest life, is also a billionaire - his fortune is estimated to be around 4 billion USD. He owns a yacht and several luxurious real estates around Russia.
In today's #vatnik soup I will introduce 🇷🇺's most "hawkish hawk" and Putin's old friend,Nikolai Patrushev. He belongs to Putin's siloviki faction & he's considered to be one of his closest advisors. He's also seen as one of the likeliest candidates for continuing Putin's work. 1/6
Patrushev directed FSB 1999-2008, and he's been involved in the espionage business since the 70s. He worked with Putin already during this time at Leningrad KGB. UK public inquiry stated that Patrusev (with Putin) was responsible for the 2006 poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko.2/6
Litvinenko had accused Putin of ordering the assassinations of Berezovsky & Politkovskya, but 2016 UK report suggested that Litvinenko was actually killed for calling Putin a pedophile and stated that at some point FSB had videos of Putin having sex with underaged boys.
How did Putin get so rich? In today's #vatnik soup I'll be introducing one of his money men, oligarch Gennady Timchenko. Timchenko has a special place in Finnish people's hearts, as he also has Finnish citizenship and has been doing a lot of business in 🇫🇮.
1/9
Putin and Timchenko go way back. The Pandora papers revealed that already in 1991 Putin gave Timchenko a oil export license. At the time this was a big deal, as exports from Russia were just starting & anyone who could get their hands on them could become incredibly rich.
2/9
For his oil business, Timchenko found Gunvor group which would export Russian oil worth of billions of dollars. He sold his share of the company to other co-founder, Swedish billionaire Torbjörn Törnqvist a day before he was sanctioned by the US Treasury in 2014.
3/9
In today's #vatnik soup, I'll introduce a man who has worked mostly behind the scenes - Vladislav Surkov. Some of you might not even recognize the name, but he's the main architect of both the polarizing disinformation program and the annexation system of 🇷🇺. 1/9
Many perceive Surkov as a key figure behind Putin's power and P. Pomerantsev gave him the nickname "Putin's Rasputin". Vladislav was the key figure in putting Kadyrov to his current position (Kadyrov calls him his "sworn brother" and even has a picture of
him on the wall). 2/9
Surkov's approach to geopolitics comes through theatre - he studied theatre direction for 3 years and he's an excellent dramaturg. He is also closely related to a movement called "political technology", which is often referred as "a industry of political manipulation".
