A few testmanship tips that never failed me (from med school til the PLE).

1. Upon receiving the test paper, I check the set, number of pages, and if all my papers are complete.

This allows me to quickly browse which topics were yielded for that exam.

2. There is always AT LEAST 2 clues when answering a question. The board will never give you less.

It’s just up to you whether you know what those 2 clues are. This is where the buzzwords come in.

If you reviewed enough, you’ll be familiar with at least 1 of the clues.
3. NEVER give up on a question. NEVER base your answer on a guess.

There is ALWAYS a connection you can make. Retrieve it from the deepest parts of your brain. No matter how absurd the connection is, chances are that it’s correct.

If wala talaga, virtual B. But do not abuse.
4. Most people already know this, but if there are 2 contradicting choices, the answer is probably from one of those choices.

OR!

Make a connection between 3 of the choices. If there is a connection, then the deviant is the answer. Odd one out.

Simple but often missed by many.
5. When deducing the correct answer, write your thought process on the side of the question. Why? Bec there is a high chance that you’ll forget some concepts later.

Better write what you’re sure of NOW! You can also use the concepts you’ve written for other questions.
6. Answer on the test paper first. Do NOT shade in the scantron immediately.

When unsure of an answer, mark the number so you can go back to it later. Still, write your idea/thought process on how to answer beside the question.

Make sure to finish your first “daan” in 1 hour.
7. On your 2nd “daan”, shade on the scantron the answers you’re sure of.

Analyze again the marked numbers you’re unsure with. Mas deducible na yan.

If still unsure, skip. Don’t shade yet. Write the question# on the lower right of ur paper so you can go back to it again later.
8. By your 2nd “daan”, you’re already familiar with the concepts asked throughout those 100 items.

With this, you can use a question to answer another question.

PAY ATTENTION! All exams have these clues. The Board is just testing if you are resourceful enough.
8. (Cont.)

Ex:
In 1 question, you’re given a case on disease X. Mahaba yung case, it describes the symptoms etc. but ultimately, the question is about the management.

In another question, it asks about the symptoms of disease X. If no idea ka, use the clues from the other #!
9. Your 3rd “daan” should just be you going back to the numbers you’ve written on the lower right of your paper.

Analyze, shade on scantron, then cross out the number on the lower right of your paper.

PRESENCE OF MIND! Never miss answering and shading a number.
10. If you can maximize your time, DO SO. Spend your remaining time double checking your scantron.

Countercheck scantron with the answers in your test paper. Check your scantron if all items were shaded. Make sure there are no mistakes in shading.

It’s ok to finish last.
These are actually just generic tips but I hope reiterating them here would help other people!

Also, do not ask the proctors if there are corrections. The BOM already knows about the typos. Treat the typos as blessings. Bonus mga yan, docs 😉

Hack the exam.
Think hard but also think smart.

Good testmanship can probably contribute to 15-20% of correct answers.

More importantly, study, study, study. Memorize AND analyze.
Mindless memorization would guarantee failure.

Analysis is the key (Higher Order Thinking Skills)
