Some folks didn't get the significance of me presenting the news with my dreadlocks.
In my lifetime, TV was a place where the BBC, a public funding media, paid David Baddiel to do racist Blackface whilst mocking footballer Jason Lee's locks.
This dehumanised all black people 1/4
More than "Just a joke".
A racist stereotype was broadcast across the uk. Influencing public perception- How many Black people walked into school, job interviews, meetings... with people that had laughed & internalised this 'joke'. How did they view black people after watching?
Over a million views of me reading the news. The majority of the comments are positive and understanding; but there are still racists comments mixed in. No doubt in the 'just a joke' mindset. tiktok.com/@antoinespeake…
It is good that @AbsoluteLeePod received an apology(after 25 years). The sketch impacted him on a personal level.
BUT, the black community still live with these stereotypes, jokes & traditions that remain a scare on society.
Here's my doc on #Blackface
Feel free to follow me to support my work- often non-hair related... but always important stories that deserve your attention. Have a nice day
"Thank you for representing us"
Black people with & without locs, come up to me all the time & say this.
Those that have seen negative stereotypes, narratives, stories, and jokes... Those that still fear the potential racist reaction to simply being their beautiful natural self
Public funded- ie black licence fee payers, literally had their money taken and used to broadcast anti-black racism. Take a moment to think just how disgraceful that is
