Expected Threat (xT) from passes, zone control.

Areas shaded in a team's color means they had more xT from passes in that zone.

Argentina, naturally, in control..... what a result!

While I don't think enough credit has been given to Saudi Arabia's tactics in defense vs Argentina, I don't think Argentina did their homework well.

They had similar tactics in their AFC Qualifiers

We'll look at scenes from 🇯🇵 & 🇦🇺 matches, & share 2 ways to beat them ImageImageImageImage
Before we begin, here's a little thread I made about Saudi Arabia's tactics out of possession.

The key points: high back line, and a compact shape both between defenders & attackers and between left & right. Clog the midfield.
First off, a trademark of the Saudi defensive structure is a very compact shape with a well-drilled high line.

We saw that vs Argentina, we see it here vs Japan... Image

Fucking hell that's good Image
Honestly...

Canada are making sure Belgium can only play through their CBs and WBs. Belgium have a roundabout way to get any midfielder on the ball.

Some fouls & little mistakes by Canada but defensive shape-wise, so so good Image
This say it all. KDB had to move to the WB position for a second to get the ball, looks up, gets sad at literally ZERO options, and has to go back to Vertonghen Image

Stuff I’m seeing on this is trying to dismiss this since if ARG had a packet winger it wouldn’t work.

They fail to realize it’s possible Renard set up like this to EXPLOIT that weakness in Argentina’s squad.

Defense can be proactive, it’s not always just reacting to an opponent
Many people will look at strong defensive performances as that team hunkering down, being scared, only trying to react to opponent attacks…

But much like an attacking team prodding a weak left back for example, defensive instructions can be used to exploit an attacking weakness
It shows how many people pretty much just focus on the attacking side of the game, the in-possession team.

Some defense-first football is reactive, some is “negative”…

But just how there are tons of methods to put out attacking tactics, there’s many to put out defensive ones

Team style/performance radars for the 2022 K League 1

🧵👇

#KLeague Image
These are percentile ranks, so all teams' numbers ranked against each other.

Many of these are style metrics, where a higher percentile doesn't equate to "better" (like possession metrics)

Many are performance, such as shots etc
Ulsan, the champions

Strong everywhere. Possession-based team, with the ability to string together the longest passing chains on avg, but also at a decent passing tempo ImageImage
