(1/7) David Baddiel says that he doesn't care about Israel and feels no connection to it. But his indifference does not mean that #jewsdontcount and antisemtism have nothing to do with Israel. A thread...
(2/7) Baddiel holds 'progressives' responsible for contemporary antisemtism, even that coming from the far right, on the grounds that they treat other forms of racism differently and largely ignore anti-Jewish racism.
(3/7) It is deeply ironic to make this argument in a prime time show on the most progressive of the UK's main TV channels, and citing the Royal Court as evidence given they've just staged 'Jews in their own words', and demonstrating culpability by focusing on two black women.
(4/7) But beyond that, blaming the left ignores how antisemtism has been redefined in a decades-long project called 'the new antisemtism'. This makes Israel *not* individual Jews the main target of contemporary antisemtism.
(5/7) By this definition, Amnesty International, the United Nations, even international law are antisemitic. This undermines attempts to tackle antisemtism yet Baddiel doesn't mention it. His rhetorical indifference to Israel is not innocent. It provides cover for this omission.
(6/7) The conflation of antisemtism with antizionism is dangerous to Jews and it's racist both in shutting down discussion of Israeli apartheid and ethnic cleansing, and in its disproportionate impact on Palestinians and more generally on people of colour.
(7/7) Israel acts in the name of world Jewry. The UK Board of Deputies says that opposing racism must include opposing boycotts of Israel. None of this makes individual Jews responsible for Israeli actions. But it makes Israel part of understanding Jewish identity & antisemtism.

(1/10) The broadcast version of episode 2 of #LabourFiles on Labour's 'antisemitism crisis' has some good stuff but lacks a coherent narrative and leaves out the Panorama documentary and EHRC report. This thread details what's in the longer online version.
(2/10) The online version refutes both the overall narrative of the Panorama 'hit job' on Labour antisemitism and individual points e.g. it contrasts ex-staffer Ben Westerman saying he was asked if he's from Israel with audiorecording of him being asked which branch he's from.
(3/10) It shows legal advice that Labour would win the defamation case brought by the ex-staffers appearing in Panorama and by John Ware who made the doc. The advice says that a pay out to John Ware would have a chilling effect on free speech. Starmer paid out to all of them.

(1/7) It's worth watching the extended version of #LabourFiles part 1 linked below. There is more background on all of the cases. But if you don't have time, here's a short thread of some key details that are missing from the version broadcast last night.
(2/7) @angelaeagle was asked before Labour HQ suspended her onstituency Labour Party, Wallasey, in summer 2016. She supported doing it and the staff member responsible said in emails that the suspension was to give Angela Eagle time to organise against local activists.
(3/7) @GarethThomasMP lobbied Labour HQ for disciplinary action against @PamelaFitzNWC who is a member of Harrow West Labour Party where he is MP. He did this in a completely two-faced way while he was pretending to support her in public.

(1/4) Under Corbyn, about a third of the active members in my Labour branch were Jewish. All of them are on the left. Now only one of those is still active in the party. Some quit because of how antisemitism is being handled under Starmer. He's not making the party unsafe for us.
(2/4) In Nov 2020, having had two motions on Corbyn's suspension blocked, we voted on a statement of solidarity with Jeremy. It passed 15 to 2. All 6 Jewish members present backed it. The motion was blocked from debate by the constituency in the name of making Jews feel welcome.
(3/4) At constitutency party level, there were more Jews on the exec under left leadership. I was the most senior as secretary. The right abused and bullied me. They slagged me off to people. Then they stood in meetings talking about how we need to make Jews feel safe & welcome.

The lovely thoughtful @tonylerman talks to me about his new book 'Whatever happened to antisemitism?'

He explains how antisemitism has been redefined, Israel's role in that and the devastating consequences for the Palestinian struggle Image
This is the first interview on my channel. I'm thrilled that it's with Tony. And I'm looking forward to seeing how people respond to it, even the trolls.
It should not be down to a tiny channel like mine with under 500 followers and no financial backing to provide this kind of crucial content for the left. But while it is, I need everyone who understands its importance to share the hell out of it.

This thread is part of the account from @EagletonOliver's book 'The Starmer Project' of John McDonnell's role in pushing Labour towards remain. There's a lot more detail in the book, which is both well written and informative. I hope this thread encourages people to read it.
After Corbyn won the leadership the second time in 2016, he wanted a shadow cabinet that rewarded loyalty and minimised hostility but didn't just contain Corbynites. McDonnell pushed for Starmer on the grounds that his inclusion would legitimise the leadership with other MPs.
McDonnell for much of the time sided with Corbyn in wanting to avoid Labour becoming a pro-remain party, a party that did not respect the EU referendum result. But eventually he flipped. While Starmer was the prime mover, Corbyn "would not have flipped" without McDonnell.
