Let’s be clear: the so-called ‘free speech’ proposal was a screen. At stake was the proposers’ insistence on their ‘right’ to deny the existence and rights of another group of human beings. What they described as a freedom of speech issue, I saw as a human rights issue.
Therefore, I was proud to support the majority vote against both proposals.
2nd, that ‘free speech’ term they were hiding (so poorly!) behind, in this instance, the denial of trans existence & rights, has not been curtailed by anyone. If anyone is in doubt, just follow the proposers for 5 minutes on Twitter. They repeat their views ad nauseam
Third, I have watched over and over again with dismay, how every disagreement with @JKRowling brings out an absolute mob of followers, many of whom are extremely abusive. Her free speech is seriously not in danger from the Society of Authors or any of its members.
Fourth, I have watched with equal dismay, the personal attacks on @joanneharris and I was very happy to support her at what must have been a painful meeting. My own view is that she has handled these debates with care and patience.
Fifth, as a slight aside, I am sick to death of GC writers attempting to hijack a more progressive and inclusive feminism, one that supports trans rights.
I can only hope that @SocietyofAuthors continues to support authors, as authors, and that includes trans authors. This stops no one from holding their personal views. It is, quite simply, the kind of good practice and inclusiveness we demand of any organization.
