🧵1/ Nine months ago today, Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine. Since then, our #EyesOnRussia project has investigated, verified & documented thousands of incidents from the conflict.
Our Monitoring Map has over 6600 entries. It's free for everyone.
2/ The team is made up of investigators and volunteers from around the world, including from the UK, France, Ireland, Norway, Germany, Romania, Ukraine, Canada, the US, Mexico, Portugal, South Africa, Kenya, Thailand, Tunisia & more. Below is just a snapshot of their work👇
3/ In April, @hengenahm investigated the Yalivshchyna burial sites, after the withdrawal of Russian forces from Chernihiv. His work was sadly an indication of the growing cost to civilians caught in Putin's war.
4/ In May, @BenDoBrown used open source evidence to show Russian forces had built an outpost in Chernobyl's exclusion zone - including moving military equipment close to Reactor 4 - as well as storing military gear in civilian buildings.
5/ In June, CIR investigators, in partnership with the brilliant team at @GeoConfirmed, revealed how Russian forces had themselves used open source to target a facility in Kyiv to destroy a captured military vehicle.
6/ Again in June, the team documented how over 300 civilian buildings in Makariv had been targeted and destroyed by Russian military - transforming a commuter town near Kyiv into rubble.
7/ In July, we put together the first comprehensive study using open source to document the expansion of mass graves in Ukraine - focusing on Bucha, Mariupol, Chernihiv & Kherson - & showing clear, grim indications of war crimes.
8/ Also in July, @93Bcr focused on disinformation around the war, writing a report into how children are weaponised to increase support for the war in Ukraine, through Soviet-era propaganda techniques and digital-age tactics by the Kremlin.
9/ In August, our investigators uncovered evidence of Ukrainians being illegally deported to Russia, using open source content & satellite images to confirm the existence of deportation camps - supporting the testimony from eyewitnesses.
10/ In September, investigators collected open source evidence showing Russian forces firing near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. We also published evidence of Russian forces storing heavy military equipment around the NPP.
11/ In October, we published the second of our "Life Under Occupation" series about Kherson, focusing on how the occupying administration was created and who was perpetuating the occupation.
12/ And just this month, we published an in-depth investigation into Severodonetsk, using six case studies to show how civilian infrastructure had been targeted and destroyed by Russian military forces.
13/ At its heart, the #EyesOnRussia project is about justice. We hope our work will be invaluable to future prosecutions & accountability processes. Our Ukraine database already has almost 17,000 individual entries - each one a story of loss, grief & war.
14/ Our work is also a testament to the strength & collaborative spirit of the #OSINT community. Huge thanks to @bellingcat@C4ADS@GeoConfirmed@AdvDemocracy & others, inc our Ukrainian colleagues. Read more about our work 👇
15/ A special mention to the @DartCenter - our investigators have to see hundreds of distressing, graphic images & videos each day. Their vicarious visual trauma training & support has been invaluable. 🙏
1/ CIR has investigated images circulated today of the bullet-ridden car of Kirill Stremousov, who served the Russian occupation of Kherson as deputy governor until his death last week. Our investigators have ruled out claims that he was killed by gunfire. Thread by @gfusfus ⬇️
@gfusfus 2/ Kirill Stremousov, the Russian-assigned deputy governor of Kherson Oblast died in a car crash on November 9, 2022. Today, a week after the crash, images emerged on social media, showing bullet holes on the right side of the vehicle.
@gfusfus 3/ The earliest reports and footage from the scene started appearing in the late afternoon that day.
2/ Available open-source evidence points to multiple potential launch locations, in part due to significant Russian activity before and after the Kramatorsk attack.
Data gathered from the morning of the strike indicates that several Russian missile instalments were active.
3/ However, there is one clear site that shows both smoke from where the launch occurred on 8 April on satellite imagery, & also matches footage filmed of missile launches: it's from a site next to an ash pond at the Zuhres power station, near the village of Shakhtne
Soldiers invade, but it’s bureaucrats who occupy—that’s the reality currently playing out in the occupied parts of the Kherson region, where the Russian invasion has been followed by a second assault by bureaucrats, bankers, commercial interests & law enforcement.
The Kremlin—and its arm in Kherson, the occupying authorities—are attempting to entice, persuade, compel, or if need be, violently force civilians in Kherson to accept Russian rule.
It has been six months since Russia invaded Ukraine, and we have documented, verified and investigated each step of the way as the Kremlin pursuits a senseless war on Ukraine.
On the outset, our Ukraine Witness archive currently sits at more than 11,000 entries of videos and photos, which are categorised, verified and analysed.
This archive is shared with justice, accountability, humanitarian and research groups to support them where it matters.
To build the database, we've been working with the open source community, which really shows the strength in collaboration to create the combined product of the database and map.
A big thanks to @bellingcat, @GeoConfirmed and to all of the analysts who helped along the way ✊
For the past four months @93Bcr & @Gralhix have been documenting what’s being said in Kremlin media and pro-Russian channels, specifically around content supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. There’s a lot of it to look at, but one clear trend emerged.
There is a clear indication in many of these channels showing what appears to be manipulation of minds at the earliest of ages.
