Today I’m announcing that we’re expanding the #ULEZ London-wide in a move that will bring cleaner air to *5 million* more Londoners. Here’s why ⬇️
Our city is being smothered by toxic air—and it's hurting and killing Londoners, leading to asthma, dementia, and even cancer. Air pollution particles have even been found in the livers and brains of unborn babies. We cannot stand idly by and allow this to continue.
Today I’ve also announced support to help make this change easier for Londoners, including a new £110 million scrappage scheme, which will help Londoners on lower incomes, disabled Londoners, micro businesses and charities…
…to scrap or retrofit their non-compliant vehicles in exchange for a grant or free annual bus and tram passes. I know this will make a huge difference to countless Londoners.
Around 4,000 Londoners die prematurely each year because of long-term exposure to air pollution, with the greatest number of deaths in outer London boroughs.
That’s why this expansion is so important—we need to clean the air for everyone.
🍃 It'll bring cleaner air to 5 million more Londoners
🍃 Only 15% of highest polluting vehicles will be affected
🍃 There's a £110 million scrappage scheme to help low income and disabled Londoners, charities, micro businesses & sole traders
🍃 They'll be able to scrap or retrofit their non-compliant vehicles in exchange for a grant or free annual bus and tram passes
🍃 All net revenue will be reinvested to improve public transport, including the biggest ever expansion of bus routes in outer London
🍃 Nearly 94% of vehicles travelling in the current zone already meet ULEZ standards.
🍃 If you or your family spend time in a high-polluting car, you are at the most risk of toxic air. Greener alternatives aren't just healthier for other people - they're healthier for you too.
My grandparents were from India. My parents from Pakistan. I was born and raised in London and am proud to call Britain my home.
🧵A long thread

But like many Londoners who can trace their family history to different parts of the world, I feel a strong connection with my heritage, which means both India and Pakistan are dear to me and hold a special place in my heart. 2/12
That’s why I’ve found the ugly scenes in Leicester and Smethwick over the last week so heart-breaking. British Muslims and British Hindus have far more in common than that which divides us. 3/12
The easing of COVID-19 restrictions is great news for our city’s economic recovery, and will come as a relief to many businesses who have faced significant hardship since the pandemic began. (1/4)
This is not the end of our fight. COVID-19 still poses a significant threat and wearing a face covering is one of the most effective things we can do to stop the spread. The Government must rethink its plans and keep legislation in place to make face coverings compulsory. (2/4)
Face coverings will remain a condition of carriage on TfL services. I’m asking everyone to do the right thing and continue to wear a face covering when travelling on TfL to keep Londoners protected and prevent further restrictions from being necessary later down the line. (3/4)
You may hear a lot of talk about Blue Monday today, but the fact is that mental health matters all year round. It's something that many of us grapple with. If you’re struggling, remember: you are not alone. Here are some places you can go for support 🧵 (1/4)
You can call @samaritans 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The number is 116 123 and it’s free to call (2/4)
