On this day #100yearsago, Howard Carter and his team of archaeologists broke the seal of the recently discovered tomb of King Tutankhamun in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. Asked if he could see anything inside, Carter replied “Yes, wonderful things.”
Here is Carter’s own account of what happened, #100yearsago
I didn’t want to break my Twitter hiatus, but this was one of those historic moments that deserves to be remembered and shared.
Of course, we all know what happened next.

1. Today in Microsoft Flight Simulator I'm at Kitty Hawk to reenact the first-ever flight of the world's very first airplane, the 1903 Wright Flyer.
2. At first glance, the boxy Wright Flyer doesn't look much our modern notion of an airplane. In fact, it possesses all the key features that still define an airplane to this day. In this thread, I'll explain how.
3. There are four forces that account for how and why an airplane is able to fly: lift, weight, thrust, and drag.
Going to go out on a limb here and say these protests in China - at least for now - are more likely to lead to Xi Jinping's political downfall than the CCP's.
I think the average person in China has a very difficult time imagining what replaces the CCP. But they find it very easy to imagine a different leader taking China in a somewhat more open direction.
There have always been sporadic protests across China, but always isolated and focused on local complaints. Protests across multiple cities voicing the same agenda, in communication with each other, is the CCP's absolute worst nightmare that it has always sought to prevent.
I am surprised that anyone is surprised Trump had dinner with Nick Fuentes. This is who Trump has always been, and exactly what he meant when he said the Charlottesville marchers included some “very fine people”.
I’m not saying the things Fuentes says reflect Trump’s firmly held convictions. I’m not even sure they reflect Fuentes’ convictions. Both of them just like stirring the shit and the attention they get from lighting things on fire.
The problem is that the shit and the fire are real, even if it’s “just” a performance.
1. As an airplane passenger, have you ever been curious what happens in the cockpit? What a pilot actually learns and goes through to become a pilot? Have you ever wondered, in the back of your mind, whether it's something you'd be cut out to do?
2. I just want to let my friends here know that, early next year, I'll be coming out with a book: "Cleared for the Option: A Year Learning to Fly".
3. I know, I know, this probably isn't the book most of you expected me to write. You might have expected a book about China or economics. But something unexpected happened along the way, and the best adventures are often unexpected ...
I would be very interested in a Twitter- like social media platform with verified real name only. I don’t think it would solve every problem, but would solve a lot of them.
I’m about to hear from all the people who say anonymity is essential to them because they’d get fired otherwise. I’m not trying to limit your free speech. I’m just saying I value interactions with real verified people more.
For me, the whole value of having a presence on Twitter is that you know who I am and - for better or worse - can weight my words accordingly. And I approach following others here in the same vein.
The focus on Bretton Woods (in isolation) or on some mythical US-Saudi “deal” to use the dollar is a search for a political Rosetta Stone that will avoid the need to understand the changing economics that underpin the world economy.
Sorry, not sorry.
The world economy is not a “regime”, it is a dynamic. That’s not to say that political decisions don’t matter. Just that they don’t dictate outcomes in a way that makes it easy to trace and attribute either credit or blame for all events.
But people prefer to imagine a “regime” because that seems a lot easier to understand than a complex system of iterative interactions. If I can just discover the “deal” or arrangement that explains all things, good and bad, then I possess gnosis (the secret knowledge).
